An 1850’s double reed mahogany Watchman’s Rattle, first used in 1858 in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, which is now New York City; and is known as the first organized police patrol. Night patrols carried these rattles and a green lit lantern to give alarm in case of fire or disorder. By holding he handle and spinning the rattle, the reeds would snap off the the spurs and emit the well known clackety clack sound. The alarm would be passed on and on to the station. As most chimneys were built of wood, and roof of thatch, villages required that fires be extinguished before bedtime. “To Curtail Fires” became what we now know as curfew. When the night was over and the Rattle Watch was dismissed, they placed the lamp outside their door to signal that the watch was at the ready. The caliber of watchmen was low, and the young men were known to often cause trouble and the service didn’t really last too long.
