Alea Mae in Clay

Join us at AKAR this Friday, October 2, from 5–8 pm for the Downtown Fall Gallery Walk.

We’re excited to feature new work by Alea Mae, a member of the AKAR team, Iowa City artist, and educator at the Iowa Ceramics Center.

Alea’s wheel-thrown functional ceramics are high-fired in gas reduction, creating rich surfaces and subtle variations in color.

Stop in, see the work, and enjoy an evening of art throughout downtown Iowa City.

Three artists, three distinct approaches to surface, brought together through pattern, repetition, and a restrained palette.

Lines, motifs, textures, and gestures move across the clay in different ways—some measured and architectural, others fluid, organic, and layered. Together, the work shows how pattern can be both quiet and expressive, shaping the way we see and experience each form.

A teapot by Peter Karner, whose work explores the relationship between form and decoration.

The repeated pattern moves across the body in soft greens, browns, and smoky grays, while the copper and coiled-wire handle adds another layer of line and rhythm.

And if you like the teapot, we love pairing it with this Peter Karner yunomi, which carries the same rich surface, pattern, and palette into a smaller form.

Support The Studio Potter, one yunomi at a time.

This year, 150 yunomi were generously donated by participating artists as part of our Studio Potter Donation, benefiting The Studio Potter Journal Writers Fund.

About 70 of those donated yunomi are still available, including the group shown here.

The Studio Potter Donation is just one part of the larger Yunomi Invitational collection, so there are still many other yunomi to explore as well, both in the gallery and online.

Purchasing one of the Studio Potter Donation yunomi directly supports The Studio Potter and the writing and voices it helps bring to the ceramics community.

Thank you to the artists who made this possible, and to everyone who has already purchased a yunomi in support of The Studio Potter.

Now open: Joe Pintz Solo Show

Joe’s first solo exhibition with ClayAKAR brings together familiar forms alongside new variations that extend them.

Bowls, cups, pitchers, and vessels made with an understated simplicity, tactile surfaces, and the kind of irregularities that make each piece feel distinctly its own.

Available now online at ClayAKAR.

Reflections, yunomi, and a little Iowa City.

The remaining yunomi have moved into our front window, and we love walking by and seeing people slow down, stop, and look. Something about all those cups mixed with the reflections of downtown keeps catching people’s attention.

If you’re downtown, come take a look. The remaining yunomi are still available online too.

Joe Pintz pares his forms down to the essentials.

Using simple handbuilding techniques and a richly colored brick clay, he lets small irregularities remain visible and become part of the character of each piece. His subtle, weathered glazes are developed to complement the marks left by the forming process.

Joe Pintz Solo Show opens tomorrow.
