During the Jurassic Period, the Earth’s climate was much warmer and wetter than it is today. Scientist-in-Residence Dr. Victoria Egerton is a paleobotanist who is studying the fossil plant evidence at the Jurassic Mile dig site. This research will paint a picture of what the site looked like 150 million years ago.
Let’s Talk Dino Teeth!
What is it about dino teeth?!
The paleo team is enamored with finding teeth at the site! The enamel in teeth fossilizes in a unique way and creates a black shiny coating that makes them very distinguishable in the tan rock.
Where mountains and a prehistoric seabed meet...we’re at The Jurassic Mile dig site! Scientist-in-Residence Dr. Phil Manning is here to tell you about what makes this site so special.

Discovery of Sauropod Footprints!
Walking in the footsteps of GIANTS! 🦕
The team uncovered TWO juvenile sauropod footprints yesterday at the Jurassic Mile dig site! Trackways can unlock secrets into behaviors of dinosaurs—like did they move in packs or herds and how fast were they?
See the moment of discovery in this video!
Jurrasic Mile dig site in Wyoming
Today, we’re giving you a peek at the dino treasures the team is uncovering right now! You’re looking at the arm and neck of a sauropod that is more than 150 million years old.
🦕Humerus, ulna, and radius arm bones
🦕7 cervical neck bones
🦕 A scapula shoulder blade
They’ve also uncovered a handful of teeth from theropods indicating this sauropod was a feast for a pack of predators or scavengers. Stay up to date on our adventures at the dig site here: childrensmuseum.org/blog
Name something cooler than dinosaurs. Go ahead...we’ll wait. 🦕🦖
Some of the largest animals to ever walk the Earth roamed RIGHT HERE where we are standing! Our lead paleontologist, Dr. Jenn Anne is here to give you the lay of the land and share our top priorities for this dig season.
Ophthalmosaurus
What is an Ophthalmosaurus?
This "fish lizard" is one of the Monsters of the Mesozoic that will be displayed in the new Dinosphere in 2022! With paddles instead of fins, this creature is definitely unique. Learn more from our Lead Paleontologist Dr. Jenn Anné.
