I started this gallery with artists like in mind and now her mom’s having a show this August first Friday. 61st month. “My inspiration for this fire sale has been the movement toward Mid Century Modern furniture (…or what we had at home and didn’t appreciate) and art. The resurgence of interest in these art forms spurred my design esthetic with geometric shapes and bold color reminiscent but with a modern twist. I also had children in mind and elementary classrooms as I used colorful shapes and bright colors. I felt like a phoenix rising from a long sleepy state of no creation to prolific production pouring into these small maquettes meant to be samples. Then the show happened. I was very happy and fulfilled when one of my first buyers was a young boy of 6 or 7 with his father he purchased two pieces… and now once again someone saw them online and I’m bringing them back with some newer pieces combined. Leah Jackson Keel is a painter from Indianapolis, IN and she is soon moving to Arkansas. This is a fire sale.”

Jaqui Gaeta is a Mexican-American artist based in Indianapolis, IN. Gaeta has completed her Associates in Fine Arts from Ivy Tech Community College and is now pursuing her Bachelor of Art History at Herron School of Art and Design. Her creative endeavors are informed by her multiple and sometimes conflicting identities, which include Christian and agnostic beliefs, the assimilation of American culture and the preservation of her Mexican heritage, intersectional feminism, astrology, mythology, the natural world, and art history. Join her in her first solo show, where she explores and blends the distinctions in domestic craft and fine art in textiles.

5-15-23, 6-10 pm. In This Is Home, Larson, who is living in Indianapolis, Indiana, images places of shelter and of her own neighborhood. Borrowing a large format camera to shoot 4x5” black and white negatives, Larson imaged an abandoned mill with remnants from what once was a make-shift shelter. Shot on expired color film rolls, Larson obtained for free, she documented a walk through her neighborhood which consists of abandoned houses with broken windows, graffiti, her own rental home, and the juxtaposition of a newly built house next to one that is rotted and uninhabitable.
From the Artist: Through growing up without much money I learned early on tricks to live frugally. Most of the clothes I wore were gifted to me from family friends, and I had free lunch at school. Going to Herron School of Art + Design, has grown harder each year due to rent and prices in general going up, leading to me working more and more each year. I am grateful for the privilege and opportunity to pursue higher education, and hopefully a degree will allow me to have a more sustainable living situation one day.
With this project I want to ask viewers; “Where are you going to sleep tonight? Where did you wake up this morning?”
For some, having a house and a bed is not a worry. For others, there is fear of losing their home or those already homeless, worry of finding shelter day-by-day.
Every year I try to donate old clothes, buy toiletries and non-perishable foods to donate to homeless shelters. I understand the struggle and the worrying of these “simple” things, so whenever I have enough financial security to help, I do.
With this opportunity to showcase my art at Hoy Polloy Gallery, I wanted to bring up housing issues in our society; to use this art show as a platform to advocate for privilege awareness, and to inspire the Indianapolis community to give back.
I intend to donate a portion of sale of my prints to homeless shelters. Corrin Larson just finished her third year at Herron School of Art + Design. She is pursuing a degree in Integrative Studio Practices merging painting with photography. Larson is very passionate about feminism, classism and the advocation for human rights.
