We were honored to welcome Tom Sparks, Founder and President of the Short Snorter Project, to the Museum yesterday. Mr. Sparks generously donated a remarkable short snorter bearing Jimmy Stewart’s name—an exciting new addition to our Military Gallery.

The term “short snorter” comes from an old slang term for a small drink of liquor. Crew members passed banknotes around before a flight so each could sign them, creating a unique record of the journey and those who shared it.

We’re grateful to Mr. Sparks for sharing this piece of history with us—and for the opportunity to hear firsthand about the stories behind the Short Snorter Project.

Discover more about Jimmy Stewart’s grandfathers, and get a fresh perspective on the film SHENANDOAH from Historian Jared Frederick, who recently appeared on our podcast, “Talking um … uh … Jimmy Stewart.”

I visited the final resting place of James Stewart. No, not Jimmy Stewart--his namesake, his grandfather! As a follow up to my Reel History review of "Shenandoah," I trekked to Greenwood Cemetery in Indiana, Pennsylvania, to find the Stewart plot. James Maitland Stewart (1839-1932) actually served in the theater of the Civil War that his grandson would depict on screen exactly one century later. According to his obituary, J. M. Stewart "enlisted in January 1864, in the Civil War, as a member of the Signal Corps. He participated in the battles of Wi******er, Cedar Creek, Fisher's Hill, and the operations about Richmond and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served until the end of the war."

He later outlived three of his four wives, dying just as his grandson was starting to make a name for himself in the acting world. The Signal Corps emblem on his obelisk denotes his military service, but unlike his wives, his biographical information was never etched on the stone following his burial. Jimmy Stewart's other grandfather, Samuel McCartney Jackson, became a brigadier during the Civil War--just as Jimmy would after WWII. Exciting news from Jimmy Movie: The upcoming film's soundtrack is bringing together remarkable talent with a meaningful connection to Jimmy Stewart's legacy.

Singer and actress MŌRIAH will perform the film's original song, "Home to Me," while award-winning composer Grant Fonda—the great-great-grandnephew of Henry Fonda, one of Jimmy's closest lifelong friends—has created the film's original score.

Director Aaron Burns said it best:
"Grant Fonda represents the best tradition of Hollywood melding the past and the present."

The soundtrack also features the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band alongside timeless songs from the 1940s, reflecting both Jimmy's Hollywood career and his distinguished military service.

The film JIMMY premieres nationwide through Fathom Entertainment on November 6, 2026.
