UC Davis TERC is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds

The Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village is open to the public for hourly tours from Tuesday - Friday, 1 - 5 p.m. We are also open on Saturdays during the summer. The Eriksson Education Center located in Tahoe City is open for self-guided tours during the summer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day).

Join our TERC team in Tahoe!

Applications are now open for the 26-27 Service Year! Full-term positions start on November 1, 2026. We are filling two education and one field team position. As an AmeriCorps member here, you’ll gain hands-on experience in environmental science, education, fieldwork, and community outreach while helping protect Lake Tahoe. Members support Tahoe science and education through field and lab activities, science center tours, hands-on learning experiences, community events, and more. This service opportunity connects people with the science of Lake Tahoe and helps inspire stewardship of this extraordinary place.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a water chemist? Here at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, our water chemistry intern, Teran, developed a drawing to show exactly what she does and how she does it!

To wrap up her summer in the lab, our chemistry intern, Teran, wanted to take us all along on a journey to meet the fabulous UC Davis TERC Chem Team!

Meet Steven (photo 2): Steven Sesma is the Chemistry Laboratory Manager. He is pictured washing off an intern-like bug for microplastic extraction.

Meet Keeley (photo 3): Next up is Keeley Martinez. Keeley is pictured decked out in total PPE for a Total Phosphorus (TP) Sediment Digestion and is seen to be measuring out some reagents, or herself, to make some chemicals!

Meet Lily (photo 4): Meet Lily Dailey! Lily is swimming around in some pretty and pink solution at the colorimetric step of Nitrate analysis. She loves to see how chemistry is full of rainbows.

Meet Aaron (not pictured): Aaron Vanderpool does not only work with the Chem Team, but also studies on forest health, forest restoration, ecophysiology, ecological genetics, dendrochronology, particle size distribution, and algal communities.

Meet Teran (photo 5): Teran Baker is the 2026 Chemistry Intern. She spent the past eight weeks studying spring water chemistry and phosphorus cycling in the North Tahoe Basin. She is pictured vortexing herself to thoroughly mix a solution.

Did you catch that Olivia has spent her summer internship here tracing many, many… MANY rocks? You might be wondering why. She is helping to modernize the way we monitor periphyton in Lake Tahoe. Periphyton is attached algae that grows on submerged rocks and is an important indicator species for broader environmental change. Olivia is using drone imagery and deep-learning to automate periphyton detection. Through this process, she continues to trace more, more, and MORE rocks to teach the model what is, and what is NOT periphyton.

We are excited to see where this work leads, rock on!

Jump in with one of our summer interns, Aditi, as she helps deploy important monitoring equipment out on the lake!

Aditi has been working hard to analyze datasets collected from instruments we regularly deploy in the lake to monitor physical conditions.

This instrument, the Wirewalker, is a wave-powered device that can monitor conditions throughout the water column.
