On this day (May 10th) in 1869, one of the single most important events in American history took place. The driving of the golden spike which marked the completion of the world’s first transcontinental railroad.

This opened up a whole new world of commerce, progress and opportunity to eastern railroads such as the B&O and for the country as a whole. As a e celebrate National Train Day weekend and America’s 250th, we take a look back to Hyndman’s glory days as a major servicing point and helper station on the B&O mainline between Baltimore, MD and Chicago, IL over the steep and treacherous Sand Patch Grade (which starts in Hyndman).

These scenes show massive steam locomotives being dispatched at Hyndman to help the heavy freights over Sand Patch before returning to Hyndman to assist with the next freight or passenger train.

Once again we would like to thank our wonderful community for the donations and support to help make this dream to preserve Hyndman’s history a reality!

We would also like to thank Senator Patrick Stefano, the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce and WTAJ News for their continued support of both the museum itself and the City of Hyndman/Londonderry Township as a whole in this often overlooked, but incredible corner of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
