Incredible experience to be in Roma with my long time photographer and friend Moreno Maggi. He started taking photos of me in Carrara and the marble quarries back in 1991. Going through archives! So many great photos pre digital age! He was so organized and always so passionate about his work. On this visit to the travertine quarries, I was searching for blocks for this commission “Rites of Passage” for in Mobile, Alabama 2002-2004. In the wall of the quarry, we found fossilized turtle teeth. Even though these quarries are inland near Siena, Tuscany, the travertine is made of metamorphosed seabeds. Searching for raw materials is always a fascinating process! Thanks to studio for helping me realize this work and the alum patrons who funded it.
