This is Miss America. She's also a U.S. Air Force officer, a pilot, and the first active-duty service member ever crowned Miss America. โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, she continued her education at Harvard while serving in the Air Force. Beyond aviation and military service, Madison is also a passionate advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness, inspired by the loss of her mother.

A remarkable example of service, ambition, and determination, both in uniform and beyond.

Space Shuttle Discovery is on permanent display today at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, close enough that visitors can walk up and read the individual heat-shield tiles that carried it through thirty-nine missions and two return-to-flight launches nobody could guarantee would succeed.

NASA retired the entire shuttle program in 2011, and Discovery's flight record, more missions than any other orbiter built, stood as proof of a machine that consistently did its job when the country most needed proof the program still worked. It flew first after Challenger in 1988 and first again after Columbia in 2005, carrying redesigned hardware into orbit both times with a crew who trusted it to work.

Standing in front of it now, in a museum hangar instead of on a launch pad, is a strange kind of ending for a vehicle that spent its whole career being the answer to a national doubt rather than the subject of one.

What does it take to trust a machine again after it has already failed you twice?

Share this for the fourteen astronauts who never came home, and the orbiter that flew again anyway, twice.
