Join Dr. Caroline Ummenhofer of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Dr. Timothy Walker, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, for a fascinating presentation exploring how handwritten weather observations from New England whaling voyages are helping scientists track long-term shifts in global climate and ocean wind patterns.

Using historic records from the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Nantucket Historical Association, and Providence Public Library, this groundbreaking research connects maritime history with cutting-edge climate science in a way you’ve never seen before.

🗓 Thursday, June 4th, 2026

Dolphins have long captured the human imagination as highly intelligent animals capable of complex communication. But what does science actually tell us about how dolphins communicate?

Join Dr. Laela Sayigh - Senior Research Specialist, Biology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - as she explores the evolution of our understanding of dolphin communication, from early assumptions to today’s cutting-edge research. Drawing on her work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, she will highlight the structure and function of dolphins’ distinctive “signature whistles,” as well as other lesser-understood vocalizations.

This talk will also dive into the innovative tools scientists use to study dolphins, including acoustic tags, playback experiments, and sound monitoring systems that may help prevent mass stranding events. Looking ahead, Dr. Sayigh will discuss how emerging technologies—like artificial intelligence—are shaping the future of marine mammal research.

A few of our star boatbuilding students from recent years were invited back to help our volunteers work on the boat that will soon be displayed in front of the JFK Museum!

Here they are hard at work alongside our Thursday night boatbuilding volunteers. We love seeing these students continue to build their skills and stay involved with the program.

If you’re coming in for History on Tap, be sure to stop by the workshop on your way out to see what they’ve been up to!

🎤 Meet the Speaker: Dr. Laela Sayigh

Join us Thursday, June 4 at 5:00 PM for History on Tap: Dolphin Communication – Past, Present, and Future.

Dr. Laela Sayigh, Senior Research Specialist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, studies cetacean behavior and communication, focusing on bottlenose dolphins. She earned her Ph.D. from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research spans fundamental studies of dolphin communication and applied conservation work, collaborating with scientists from the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, University of St. Andrews, and Aarhus University.

At the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, Dr. Sayigh will explore how our understanding of dolphin communication has evolved—from early assumptions to today’s cutting-edge research. She’ll highlight the structure and function of dolphins’ distinctive “signature whistles” and reveal insights into lesser-understood vocalizations.

It was a great day on the water at our annual Rowing Rendezvous on Saturday!

Thank you to everyone who came out to try rowing, bring their own boat, or simply cheer others on from shore. We loved meeting you all and hope to see you back out on the water again soon!

One of the highlights of the day was watching our youth boatbuilding students christen the boats they worked so hard on and launch them for their very first row. We are so proud of all of their hard work and dedication throughout the program! More photos to come!
