Reno County Museum

Reno County Museum The Reno County Museum, located in downtown Hutchinson. The Reno County Museum consists of two historic buildings that are over 100 years old.

OUR MISSION:

THE RENO COUNTY MUSEUM COLLECTS, PRESERVES, INTERPRETS, AND SHARES THE HISTORY OF RENO COUNTY, KANSAS TO INSPIRE AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF THE PAST FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. Since moving to our current location in 1986, we have expanded our galleries to exhibit more artifacts. Our collection currently includes over 30,000 items. These items cover 150 years of Reno Count

y history. A rich history that includes, grain, railroad, and the salt industries to name a few. The Museum allows you to peer through the bars of an unforgiving, iron, pioneer jail! Be amazed that 8 people really lived in a tiny two-room claim house! Imagine what the ride felt like on the 1929 Indian Ace motorcycle! Exhibits change regularly. Our second floor gallery allows visitors to explore Hutchinson through aerial photographs. Experience all this and more at the Reno County Museum, just one block from Hutchinson’s Main Street. The Oodleplex is an interactive children’s area. We are currently making upgrades to the area! A brand new train has been added that celebrates the legacy of the ATSF/BNSF rail line in Reno County. A Gleaner combine cab has been added to engage children in the grain industry with a company that started right here! Future upgrades will include a new general store, an updated claim house and the Fox Theater! The Oodleplex is recommended for children ages 2-12 and is free though we encourage a $1 donation per child. The Museum has a range of exciting programs throughout the year. Please take a look at the upcoming events. You can also make reservations to book the conference room, museum courtyard, and the Oodleplex. Make your reservation today.

The Sugar Mill opened in the summer of 1882 to refine sorghum from local farmers. Unfortunately by 1885 the mill closed. In the 1980s the mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It would go on to have a variety of uses until it was severely damaged and was torn down in April of 2019. This photo shows it under construction at 610 E 1st.

Lets talk about Haven pioneers. Below are pictured George (L) and John (R) Worthington. This father and son team came to the Haven area in 1886. Their homestead was on the northside of the Arkansas River. At the time there was no bridge so if you were headed into Haven or Mt Hope, you had to ford the river. George died in 1896, but his son John took over the farm. In 1906, a bridge was finally built across the river near the farm. Today, anyone traveling from Wichita to Hutchinson on K-96 will inevitably cross Worthington Road.
