Our Art History Inspired workshops are back again for another week at the Hutchinson Art Center! ✨

This past Friday, Haven, KS, artist Kayann Ausherman led a workshop where students learned about American Neoexpressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat and the fun and expressive
freedom of his style that took the 1980s art world by storm. The students used acrylic paint to incorporate Basquiat’s naive storytelling style into their own artwork, featuring the subject
matter of their own experiences.

We invite you all to check back here next Sunday for the last installment of this workshop series, which focuses on the work of Rex Ray, a collage artist and graphic designer whose work takes inspiration from Pop art and midcentury modernism.

✨ COMING SOON ✨

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to exhibit the work of local artist and educator Hannah Lounsbury in our Front Gallery during the month of June into the beginning of July.

Hannah Lounsbury is a multidisciplinary artist and educator whose work is rooted in expressive portraiture. Working across large-scale painting, oil pastel, and drawing, her practice explores emotion, identity, and the complexity of human experience. Her portraits move through, either, likeness and accuracy, or capturing fleeting states of vulnerability, tension, and introspection.
Through a balance of bold mark-making, color (or lack thereof), and careful observation, Lounsbury creates figures that feel both immediate and unresolved. Some of her work focuses on realism and capturing likeness, while others are created through layered surfaces and gestural lines. This allows her subjects to exist in space between realism and abstraction, where emotion takes precedence over precision.

In addition to her studio practice, Lounsbury works as an educator in Hutchinson, fostering creative confidence and critical thinking in her students. This dual role informs her work, grounding it in both technical exploration and a continued curiosity about how individuals see themselves and others.

This exhibition will be on display in the Front Gallery from June 5th - July 3rd, 2026.

Mike Livingston of Rice County, Kansas has spent nearly fifty years as a local artist, creating Spanish-influenced furniture, bronzes and, most recently, paintings. In 1972, Livingston created his own foundry in Hutchinson and began his “ethnic primitive” sculpture style with heavy African and Native American influences. Livingston no longer creates custom furniture but devotes his time to sculpting and painting.

Martha Hamilton was a painter of plein air art, which is a French expression meaning, “in the open air,” particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Hamilton used oil paints as her medium and said she paints “only what she sees” and did not use photo reference. For many years, Hamilton grew a plethora of flowers. She enjoyed nurturing and painting still-life images of those plants. Hamilton was active as an artist for over sixty years, and she attended the University of Kansas and the Chicago Art Institute. Martha Hamilton was a founding member of the Hutchinson Art Association. She passed away in 2020.

We have ✨extended✨the deadline for enrollment for our Kids Summer Art Camp. Read on to learn more...

This year’s art camp centers on the thing most kids want to learn the most: how to actually draw what they want. Kids will work on drawing techniques that no one else dares to teach at this level. These techniques are the foundation to drawing anything and everything whether it’s from imagination, in a photo, or sitting right in front of them. This isn’t going to be your typical crafty art camp. Prepare your little artists to expand their artistic skills and come out ready to make whatever their heart desires!

Classes will be different each week. The best experience will be signing up for both weeks, as week two builds upon week one, but has also been designed to be introductory enough that students only able to attend week two will not feel as though they are behind or missing anything.

2026 Kids Summer Art Camp Schedule:
Week One: June 9th - 12th
Week Two: June 16th - 19th

Group A: Ages 6-9, meets Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Group B: Ages 10-12, meets Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

For Hutchinson Art Center members, a single week costs $30 per child, and both weeks cost $60 per child. For non-members, a single week costs $32 per child and both weeks cost $64 per child.

For more information or to enroll your child, visit our website at https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/kids-summer-art-camp.
**Enrollment for Week One closes on Friday, June 5th at 4:30 PM, while enrollment for Week Two closes on Friday, June 12th at 4:30 PM.**
