Our current Front Gallery exhibit "Cyanotypes" by Olathe, KS artist Becky Brinkley will be 🚨ENDING SOON🚨

A cyanotype is a historical printing process from the 1800s. Traditionally, the technique involves placing an object on paper coated in iron salts, exposing the paper to UV light, and washing the paper with water — no camera needed. The result is a unique white and Prussian blue image.

Her collection of “cameraless photographs,” which feature flowers from her garden as well as plants she collects from the wild, represents the exploration of several interests, including horticulture, floral forms amid the interconnectedness of the natural world, and our human experience.

So, be sure to come visit us soon and check out this beautiful display while it lasts -- your last day to view the exhibit is Saturday, December 28th, 2024.

We are less than a month away from January's make-n-take art classes! Now is the time to sign up your child if haven't already.

Classes will meet at the Hutchinson Art Center on Saturday, January 4th. Students will be divided into two groups: Group A (1:00 to 2:30 PM) and Group B (3:00 to 4:30 PM), with each group covering different skills. Each group art class costs $8 per child.

January's theme is "Learning Balance Notans"!

Balance is an important concept in art and in life so this month children will be creating their own Notan paper art. Notan is a Japanese term that means "light-dark balance". Students will draw, cut and paste their notans to create interesting, and harmonious works of art using black and white paper.

Learn more about these classes and register your child by visiting our website at https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/monthly-childrens-art-projects. ** Hurry! Classes are limited to 15 students each, with registration closing on Friday, January 3rd at 5:00 PM **

We are pleased to show the work of North Newton artist Andy Brown in our Main Gallery during the the final months of 2024 and into the beginning of 2025.

Andy Brown creates abstract paintings that dazzle with kaleidoscopes of color, shape, and form. They are an expression of his interest in the natural world as well as a result of his experiments with the Golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers.

Color also plays a signifcant role in his work. Andy shares that his art is an expression of 4 meditations he has practiced for decades: the colors blue, red, yellow, and green. For the artist, each one takes on a symbolic meaning:

Blue is for peace, serenity, and acceptance;
Red is for the love of God, of Self and my Neighbors - which includes people that are easy to love and so on all the way down to his enemies;
Yellow is for Joy, a discipline he works on by recalling gratitudes or sometimes simply walking in sunshine;
Green makes him think of the way plants store up energy from the sun, of the energy in oil -- especially oil for a brightly flamed lamp.

Come visit the Hutchinson Art Center and be memorized by Andy's work, on display in our Main Gallery now through January 4th, 2025.

Join us at the Hutchinson Art Center for January’s make-and-take art projects for children on Saturday, January 4th at the Hutchinson Art Center. This is an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art!

Group A will explore the concepts of contrast, balance, harmony, repetition and shape as they draw, cut and paste their notans to create interesting, and harmonious works of art using black and white paper.

Group B will explore the concepts of contrast, balance, harmony, repetition and shape as they draw, cut and paste their Notan on top of a water-colored background to create interesting, and harmonious works of art using black and white paper with an added technique of a watercolor background.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up their child for either Group A or Group B depending on skill level and interest. In general, the Group A project is simpler and aimed toward children aged 6-7, while the Group B project is a bit more complex and is aimed toward children aged 8-12.

Learn more about these classes and register your child by visiting our website at https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/monthly-childrens-art-projects. ** Hurry! Classes are limited to 15 students each, with registration closing on Friday, January 3rd at 5:00 PM **
