The Iron County Historical Society Museum is volunteer run & located in Hurley WI in the old courthouse, National Register of Historic Places.

We have an large collection of historical artifacts, publications, documents and photographs dating from before Iron County was founded in 1893 to recent years. Visit our exhibits on logging and mining, important industries in our history. Take a walk trough Grandma's house in our Kitchen, Living Room and Bedroom exhibits. Enter the past when you walk through our one room school, tavern, funeral p

arlor and courtroom. See how we honored our veterans and how we once dressed. And of course, no visit would be complete without a stop to our clock tower and weaving room.

Today is the 46th Annual Loon Day! There will be raffles, kid games, music, arts and craft vendors, bake sales, food vendors, and the famous Loon Calling Contest! August 2-8 is National Farmers Market Week! This annual weeklong celebration focuses on the important role farmers markets play in local communities. Not only are they great sources for fresh produce and other homemade products, they also help bring people together. We are in need of pictures from past Iron County Farmers Markets. It’s time for Ferris wheels, funnel cakes and old fashioned fun with family and friends! Today is the first day of the 99th Iron County Fair! Since 1927, the Iron County Fair has been a beloved tradition and the source of fond memories. We would like to recognize and thank everyone who dedicates their time and energy into making sure our fair runs smoothly. The Iron County Wisconsin Historical Society Museum will be having our Open House on Friday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year, we will be having two special presentations during our open house this year. They are as follows:

Frederick Douglass’ 1857 Dred Scott Decision Address Presented by Steven Cole at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.

Steven Cole has portrayed Frederick Douglass, the famed abolitionist orator for many years. Mr. Cole is a living history presenter who uses period music, songs and Frederick Douglass’ eloquent speeches to convey a message of equal rights, patriotism and justice. Steven Cole is a retired tradesman who moved to this area 12 years ago. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a passionate Historian! He will be delivering an address Frederick Douglass gave in 1857 following the Dred Scott Decision.

Bill Jamerson Presents: Dollar-A-Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps at Noon

Ironwood based singer/storyteller Bill Jamerson will present a 50 minute long program about the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Civilian Conservation Corps (also known as the CCC) was a federal works program created in the heart of The Great Depression. From 1933 to 1941, over 92,000 young men served in Wisconsin in over two hundred camps. The camps were run by the army but there were no military drills since the enrollees were civilians. The 17–25-year-olds were paid $1 a day with $25 sent home to their families each month. Dressed in uniform, Jamerson tells stories, reads excerpts from his book, shows a clip from his PBS film and sings original songs with his guitar. It’s a nostalgic, fun-filled program with much laughter and many heartfelt stories. He has performed at CCC reunions around the country and at dozens of state and national parks. The program is as entertaining as it is important; as honest as it is fun. It’s about people both ordinary and extraordinary; with stories of strength, wit and charm.

Besides the live presentations, you are invited to view and vote for the entries in the 2nd Emma Sackett Memorial Photo Showcase. Come observe our weavers in action as they make rag rugs on our looms (we have quite a few available for purchase in the weaving room and in the main floor hallway), check out our new addition to our model train area, view the class photos hung in the hallway on the second floor, browse through our collection of yearbooks (we do have some extra copies for sale in our research room) and scrapbooks, do some family research or look up information on our area’s rich past with our dedicated volunteers, and more!

The Iron County Historical Museum will be hosting an exhibit featuring local photographers from Wednesday, July 22 through Saturday, August 29 in honor of former Iron County resident and pioneering female photographer, Emma Sackett. We are inviting local photographers to submit one to three photos for the exhibit. Photos should be brought to the museum by Monday, July 20. If you or someone one you know would be interested in participating, please RSVP either by calling 715-561-2244 or visiting the museum during our summer hours (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm) or emailing [email protected]. The public will be able to vote for their favorite photo from Friday, July 24 to July 31. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive a free handmade rug made by our volunteer weavers! The Iron County Wisconsin Historical Society Museum is proud to announce that history keeper, storyteller, and library assistant Blaze Burton will be giving a presentation entitled "The Highway 51 Booze Caravan, Part 1" on Wednesday, July 22, at 6:00 PM at the Iron County Museum in Hurley. This presentation will focus on a unique episode in Wisconsin history that took place in Iron County in 1920 as the Volstead Act, which prohibited the manufacturing, selling, and transportation of booze, was in effect. This story focuses on when Hurley businessmen conspired with wealthy and powerful elites in Milwaukee to keep their establishments operating. This two-part presentation will explore one of the first attempts by tavern owners to traffic large quantities of whiskey from Chicago to Hurley via an auto caravan. The first part will cover the inception of the plot, its key players, the locations involved, and how it culminated in a deadly act of violence between Prohibition agents and the conspirators. The second part, which will be scheduled for a future date, will focus on the aftermath and the lasting effects the events had on Iron County.

Blaze Burton works for the Mercer and Wi******er Public Libraries as a Library Assistant, where he specializes in preserving, documenting, and sharing local history. He gives public presentations at both libraries on a variety of topics, including early resorts, lost locations, Prohibition, and crime.

It’s ready! The Iron County Wisconsin Historical Society Museum is excited to announce that our featured July exhibit is set up and ready for you to come and see it ! Every month this summer, we will be making a display that fits a specific theme. For the month of July, we will be remembering some of the events that occurred 50 years ago that celebrated our nation’s bicentennial. As a part of our display, we have gathered together photos and items that pay tribute to this very special moment in history and how our area celebrated it! We are alway interested in adding to our collection. If you have local memorabilia or photos taken during the bicentennial and you are willing to share them with the museum, you can let us know in the comment section of this post, private message us, email us at [email protected], or stop by the museum during our summer hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Photo: As a way of celebrating the 200th birthday of the United States of America, Mrs. Buccanero’s students in Iron Belt, WI embroidered images related to the history of our country and put it together to form a quilt. The quilt was then featured in a display put together by the Iron County Wisconsin Historical Society during the joint Iron County and Ironwood Fourth of July Parade on Saturday, July 17, 1976 on Silver Street.
