🌟 October Volunteer Spotlight: Janet Husband! 🌟

Meet Janet Husband (Myron Janet Husband), one of the friendly faces helping bring history to life at Historic Forks of the Wabash! Before joining our volunteer team, Janet spent 30 years teaching first grade and kindergarten at Lancaster Elementary School. She also has 20 years of volunteer experience, serving others in her community.

❤️ One of Janet's favorite memories at the Forks is having her grandchildren's schools visit and getting the opportunity to be their guide! What a special way to combine her love of history with her love for her family.

🌷 When she's not volunteering, Janet enjoys yard work, flower gardening, following her grandchildren's activities, and offering support to other widows.

🏡 Her favorite spot at the Forks is the Trading Post, and she's so glad to see it reopened!

⏳ If Janet could travel back in time, she would choose the Civil War era for the opportunity to meet President Abraham Lincoln.

Janet, thank you for sharing your time and talents with Historic Forks of the Wabash and helping make history meaningful for our visitors. We're so glad you're part of the Forks family!

We’re excited to share one of the newest additions to the Historic Forks of the Wabash experience! Our early 1700s French fur trading post has been brought back to life after years of sitting unused and falling into disrepair.

Over the summer, this historic building underwent a thoughtful renovation, restoring it to a place where visitors can get a glimpse of what life was like during the fur trading era.

A big thank-you to our interpreters, Tim Guy and Rick Henly, who bring this piece of history to life and help our visitors experience the past in a whole new way!

History is always unfolding at the Forks, and we’re happy to have this chapter back in the story!

What a fun idea for homeschoolers!

Homeschool Families - Join us for a fun and fascinating field trip aboard the Dixie Boat! We’ll explore the history of the lake and the Dixie, learn how this unique boat works, and discover the mechanics behind its iconic sternwheel. There will be plenty of interesting things to see and learn, making this a great adventure for both younger children and older kids. [The boat will not leave the dock.]

Please meet us at the Dixie by 10:15 a.m. so everyone is ready to go. The tour will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.

Come aboard and discover a little local history—we hope to see you there!

Registration is required because space is limited.

🌿 Volunteer Spotlight: Mark Gehrke🌿

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Mark Gehrke, a valued member of our Tuesday Team maintenance crew!

Mark retired from Ecolab, where he was the Distribution Warehouse Manager, and in retirement he keeps busy enjoying the things he loves most — spending time with his wife, traveling in their 5th wheel, working in the yard, putting together puzzles, collecting coins, and watching sports.

At the Forks, Mark is one of the people who helps take care of the many things behind the scenes that keep our grounds and historic site looking their best. We’re so grateful for the time, hard work, and willingness he brings to the Tuesday Team!

Mark’s favorite place at the Forks is the suspension bridge and Ehler Island. And if he could travel back in time, he says he’d love to go back to the late 1950s to see his dad in action aboard the USS Midway. What a wonderful family memory to imagine!

We are incredibly fortunate to have volunteers like Mark who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help wherever they’re needed. Thank you, Mark, for all you do for the Forks and for being such an important part of our volunteer family! ❤️

Our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was truly a special day. It was a chance to celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy, talents, and hearts to Historic Forks of the Wabash.

Our volunteers are the heart of Historic Forks. They are the people who open our doors, lead our tours, interpret our history, care for our grounds, help with events, work behind the scenes, and step up whenever they are needed. So much of what makes Historic Forks special simply would not happen without them.

We are incredibly grateful to the generous businesses and organizations who donated door prizes for our luncheon. 🎁 Your kindness helped make the celebration even more memorable and put some very big smiles on the faces of our volunteers!

But your generosity meant so much more than the prizes themselves. You helped us show our volunteers that the community sees them, appreciates them, and recognizes the difference they make. You helped us give back to the people who give so much.
