Surfing's origin.

La tabla de surf más antigua del mundo!

Existen dos culturas antiguas, Mochica y Chimu, que se desarrollaron en el norte del Perú hace más de dos mil años y que fueron descubiertas gracias a la evidencia de enormes ruinas o complejos arqueológicos.

Estas sociedades fueron las primeras en estar relacionadas activamente con zonas de mareas poderosas, a través de actividades como el transporte, la pesca, y los rituales. Nos han dejado numerosos ejemplos de diseños "protagonizados" por olas en la iconografía religiosa y el arte graficado en sus tejidos, frisos y cerámicas, muchos de las cuales son modelos a escala de las primeras embarcaciones utilizadas para correr olas.

Los primeros hombres que experimentaron el placer de surcar olas, entonces, fueron pescadores que tenían que enfrentarse a la fuerza de las olas para conseguir alimento. La valentía necesaria, en combinación con el instinto de supervivencia, dio lugar a un ritual de paso similar a otros rituales de guerreros o de lucha en la historia, siendo éste el más temprano ejemplo de un hombre utilizando una balsa creada específicamente para salir y entrar del mar. Estos hombre aún siguen utilizando los “caballitos de totora” en nuestros días; es posible encontrarlos en Trujillo, en el balneario de Huanchaco, el cual es famoso por esto.

Porque deslizarse sobre las olas fue una de las partes más importantes en el aprendizaje de todo pescador, ya que del completo conocimiento de las olas dependía en buena parte el éxito de la jornada pesquera.

If you haven't made it to see "The Origins of Surf" exhibit curated and installed by SHACC/Surfing Heritage then it's installation has been extended until the New Year, so you can check it out and pick up a copy of the accompanying book that the exhibit is based on "The Illustrated Atlas of Surfing History" by Joel T Smith and the art of Ronald Croci.
The book will make a great Xmas present for anyone who surfs!

We've got all sorts of new books coming in to the Museum, including just arrived two(2) that you won't find anywhere else in America, Peter Troy's Sixties travels and explorations "To the Four Corners of the World" and Nik Zanella's "Children of the Tide" that tells of the Chinese surfing a 1000 years ago, both great reading!

Some more great out of print coffee-table books just arrived at the museum, the Ogden art book, "Peanuts" the early history of South Orange County surfing and Flame, the portfolio of Larry "Flame" Moore who's legacy continues through SHACC(Surfing Heritage)'s revival of the Follow The Light Foundation with it's event coming up in September.
