While archiving today we found a receipt with the words 'War Tax'. When we looked up war tax we found out that in 1917, six months after WW1 began, the United States Congress passed the War Revenue Act; because the war had greatly increased the government's need for revenue and so an income tax increase was established. Thanks to the War Revenue Act, one-third of the cost of "The Great War" had been paid for.

For those of us living in Pittsburgh, it hasn’t seemed like a real winter. There hasn’t been a lot of snow, the temperatures have barely touched the teens, and the rain has been almost unbearable. But you can still celebrate the season in style for another month with a visit to the Raystown Lake Region to experience their Winter Fireplace Getaways, which run through the end of March. Find out more about this fantastic way to enjoy what's left of winter here! Happy Valentine's Day from Isett Heritage Museum! The card below is from our archives and was sent on Valentine's Day in 1917! Valentine's Day also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine originated as a Western Christian feast day honoring saints named Valentinus. There is a written account of Saint Valentine of Rome's imprisonment for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians. According to legend, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge and wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a goodbye before he (Saint Valentine) was executed on February 14th, 269 AD. Pope Gelasius I established the Feast of Saint Valentine in 496 AD to be celebrated in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome on the day he was executed (February 14th). In 18th-century England, valentine's day grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other through gifts (flowers, confectionery, and greeting cards). In the 19th century, Saint Valentine's Keys were given to lovers as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver's heart. It was also given to children to ward off epilepsy.
While doing some archiving we found some receipts of people buying something called Recruits. We have looked and we have no idea what that could be, does anyone have any ideas?
The picture below is one of the receipts with 1000 Recruits for $4 and a box of Camel Cigarettes for $0.80!

Happy Labor Day from Isett Heritage Museum! We will be closed on Monday, September 2nd! However, we are open Saturday from 8am - 5pm and Sunday from 12pm - 5pm! The original Labor Day was a parade held by American workers to protest long workdays with low pay. Around 10,000 workers marched from New York’s city hall to a giant picnic at a park on September 5th, 1882. Many workers risked their jobs to participate that day, however, Labor Day did not become a nationally recognized holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill to make Labor Day a national holiday on June 28th, 1894 because he wanted to end the Pullman Strike in Chicago because it was severely disrupting railway traffic.
