The Humeston Depot Museum is open today from 1–3 PM, and if you stop in, you might notice a few things missing from our scale train display. 👀

Don’t worry — it’s not because we’re taking things away! We’re doing a little updating, rearranging, and adding to make our Humeston model even better. Some pieces are off the display for a reason… because new things are coming!

We’re excited to keep bringing this little piece of Humeston history to life, one detail at a time.

A couple of things around the depot have gotten some much needed updates!

The wooden railroad water tower has its HUMESTON sign updated and re-hung, giving this landmark a fresh look while keeping its historic character.

The railroad crossing signal also received some attention! The red and white crossing gate arm was damaged during a storm, and we’re happy to have it replaced and looking like it belongs there again.

And that’s not all!

We’ve also added some new pieces to our displays inside the depot, including a Humeston High Wildcats plaque and photo commemorating the first night football game played in Iowa. 🏈

There’s always something new to see, whether you’re interested in railroad history, Humeston history, or just enjoy seeing the things that tell the story of our community.

A glimpse into Humeston’s past…

We recently added a lighted viewing board to the depot, and it has completely changed the way we can enjoy our collection of historic glass photo slides!

The nine slides shown here are just a small sample from three boxes of glass negatives in our collection. Each one captures a moment in Humeston’s history—from people and businesses to everyday life decades ago. Seeing them illuminated brings out details that have been hidden for years.

Stop by the depot during open hours to see these amazing pieces of history for yourself. You never know—you might just spot a familiar face or a place you remember.

Looking for something fun to do this afternoon? Stop by and explore everything the depot has to offer! Learn about Humeston’s railroad history, browse our displays, and see our wooden railroad water tower with its new sign!

Kids receive a FREE conductor hat and train whistle while supplies last.

We’re creating a 2026 Watermelon Days Time Capsule that will be sealed for 25 years and opened in 2051! Instead of being buried, the time capsule will be securely sealed and stored in a safe at the museum to help protect its contents for future generations.

We will begin collecting items this Saturday from 1–3 at the Depot.

You can also bring items during Watermelon Days whenever the depot is open. The time capsule will be sealed the following Saturday, so be sure to get your contributions in before then!

👉 We are asking each person to volunteer to bring ONE item they would like to contribute. This will help us include a wide variety of meaningful pieces from our community.

We’re looking to include small items that tell the story of life in Humeston in 2026, such as:

* A current Watermelon Days T-shirt
* Watermelon Days event schedule
* Humeston Depot brochure
* Local current newspaper
* Business cards from local businesses
* Restaurant menus
* Town map
* Front Street Market ad
* Printed screenshots of popular social media pages like Facebook, Snapchat, etc
* List of the Top 20 songs of 2026
* Movie ticket stub
* Concert ticket
* A few family-friendly memes from 2026
* Current gas prices
* A current postage stamp
* Photo of Main Street
* Photo of the Humeston Depot and wooden railroad water tower
* Photo of the swimming pool
* Photos of local businesses
* List of current town officials
* Church bulletins
* Cemetery map
* One-dollar bill
* A 2025 penny or one of each current coin if possible
* Anything else you’d want to see in 25 years

If you include a note explaining why your item is special or what you hope people will think when they open the capsule in 2051, we’d love to include that too.

Let’s work together to leave a snapshot of Humeston for future generations. We can’t wait to see what our community contributes!

The Humeston Depot Museum will be closed on Saturday, July 4th, so our volunteers can enjoy the Independence Day holiday with their families and friends.

We wish everyone a safe, fun, and happy Fourth of July! ❤️🤍💙

Thank you for your continued support of the museum. We look forward to welcoming you back on our next scheduled open Saturday to explore and celebrate Humeston’s rich history.
