Memory Monday...
After last week's picture of the square, it seemed like it might be good to share pictures of the square park through the years. This pictures is labeled "Humboldt n 1873" so it predates last week's picture by about 10 years. It is probably the east side of the square in the background, but that's difficult to be sure of since all the frame buildings were replaced with brick years ago.

Quad County Mueseum will be open this Alumni Weekend! Friday, Both Locations from 4:30-7pm possibly later & Downtown site Saturday, from 1-4pm or later! Tours available at any time by calling our Curator, Duane. Be sure to stop by and check out our displays!

Memory Monday...
Unfortunately the procrastination bug hit last week. So this week we're going to visit the Park Hotel one last time. The date is not given but I suspect that car aficionados can narrow the date. It's obviously much later than the previous picture, the car is a later model and the steps are concrete. If you look through the trees the church in the background appears to be the most recent Christian Church (which was dedicated in 1959). That would also mean that by this time the restaurant would have been added to the north end.

Memory Monday...
The Park Hotel (which many of us remember) was built in 1893 by a company composed of E.H. Viets, E.P. Tinker, and others. It was sold to Dr. Gandy and leased to several people to run it. The Humboldt Hummer said it had 29 guest rooms plus an office, washroom, and parlor. The first locks on the doors were installed about 1954. Other owners included Frank Kotouc, Bob Bowman, Henry Seits and John Kotouc. It was torn down in 1975, after catching on fire three times in less than a year. This picture is undated, but similar to one taken in 1911.

Memory Monday...
Continuing with hotels, this picture shows the Filson House, which was more of a boarding house. It was built in 1880 and was the residence of Mayor Filson. It had a limited number of rooms for the traveling public. Part of the building burned in the Star Lumber Fire, and the remainder was used for several small businesses, including real estate/income tax and rock shop, until it was torn down. It was located on south side of third street (between the square and the highway) where the metal building is now. This picture shows the A.D. Snow bus in front of the building (A.D. Snow ran the livery stable east of the old car wash)

Memory Monday...
The second hotel in Humboldt was the Central House Hotel, which was built in 1871 at 3rd & Nemaha (on the east side of the street). It was built in 1871 by S.M. Hilbert, who operated it for three years and then sold it to Luther Nims. Nims leased it to E.S. Norton for one year, then sold it to J.W. Minnick. Subsequent owners: William Sweeney, Mayor Filson, H.Anible Shurtleff. The hotel building was the largest in town at that time, being 36' x 50' on the ground floor and two stories high, exclusive of a basement which contained the dining room and kitchen. The cost of the structure was $4,500. The Central House rates were $1.00 a day.
