Memorial Day is not so far off, and we still have plans to operate the coming summer season with our usual hours. Unfortunately, we have a very short list of volunteers and our old, reliable list has now been reduced by 25 percent. As an added issue, two thirds of the remaining volunteers are decidedly geezerish and have strong desires to go a few places and do a few things before our own volunteerism becomes history. So this year, please come see the museum. But perhaps you should call first, to make sure it will be open for you. Our situation may result in some unscheduled closures! Again, our phone number is 719/740-0106. If we don't answer right away, ALWAYS leave a voice mail. We don't want to miss you.

Barring any unforeseen COVID-19 mutations or surprise governmental mandates, we expect to return to our normal schedule this summer, opening the museum season Memorial Day and closing it Labor Day. The museum will be open Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial and Labor Day holidays will have Sunday hours. To see the museum at any other time, call 719-740-0106 and leave a message. If we are forced to change this plan for any reason at any time, you will learn about it first right here.

Hi folks. I've been asked to identify the first Lincoln County Fair queen and the year of her reign. I can't do it. The earliest I show in any of my information was in 1967. Can anybody help me out?

We had a good opening day at the museum yesterday. It was a pleasant mixture of relatives and old and new friends. They looked at what we had to offer and didn't appear to notice the "over-completeness" of some areas and the blank, incompleteness of others. Mostly, folks were ready to get out of their own houses and expressed gratitude that we opened up at all! One young lady surprised her grandmother by offering to give me $1,000 cash immediately for our cash register!

It's been a long summer already, but a week from tomorrow, the Lincoln County Hedlund House Museum at Hugo will finally accept visitors again. The museum will open Saturday, the 4th of July, from 10 am to 6 pm, and hopefully, for the balance of the season, we will maintain our regular hours until Labor Day. I have not exactly used my extra preparation time wisely, so it will be something of a miracle if we're ready...but thanks to Dee Ann Blevins and her youthful enthusiasm and energy, I think we'll make it! See you there!

We have successfully distanced ourselves socially from almost everybody for the past few weeks, but the stormy exchanges of opinions continue to dominate the television news. Therefore, the museum steering committee has decided to postpone opening Lincoln County's Hedlund House Museum for the 2020 season until the 4th of July. Please forgive us, and thanks for understanding. The lives we save may be yours or our own!

We're searching for a photo of John P. Iseman Sr. and his first wife, Nancy, to help out a distant relative with his genealogy. We do have a few photos of John P. Iseman Jr., aka Jack Iseman, including this one with his race car, #21, from the late 1920s.

Please help us find photographs of John P. Iseman Sr. (1872-1946) and his first wife, Nancy (Douglass) Iseman. She died in 1935. He later was married to Olive Iseman.

The season has concluded; thanks to any of you who visited us this summer. For the rest of you, the coming year will be YOUR obligation! One of our last visitors was Tom Spirek, a Hugo native descended from several earlier Spireks. Tom brought copies of many early-Hugo photos for the museum to keep. A couple of them were pretty unusual (for our collection), including this ice wagon, owned and operated by Albert L. Spirek c. 1920. Thanks to Tom for his visit, his generosity and his example for others (was that a hint?).

Today marks the end of the 2018 season at the museum. We're open 1 to 5, and then it will be time to change the thermostat and store the porch swing until next summer. Nevertheless, if you didn't make it this year but still would like to visit, call for an appointment and it will happen. The phone number is on the sign in the front porch window. See you next year if not before! And, as always, thank you for supporting Lincoln County's Hedlund House Museum.

We had some special visitors at the museum yesterday—Michael Keepers and his mother, Sylvia, and Jack MacLennan Jr. Michael's great grandfather was Stephen Ellsworth Keepers Sr. who homesteaded in the Pattonsburg community south of Hugo in 1907. The family moved to town in 1918 after a son, Vernon, was killed by lightning while working a field. Ellsworth operated a shoe shop here for many years. Jack's father and grandfather had a hardware store here from 1928 until 1935 when his grandfather died. Pictured, from left, are Terry Blevins (your genial host), Michael Keepers, Sylvia Keepers and Jack MacLennan Jr.

We've had a hot time in the old town just lately, but it's cool inside at the Lincoln County Hedlund House museum. Stop by, come in and have a seat in the dining room. We'll give you a bottle of cold water and you can tell us why we haven't seen you in such a long time!
