The Mitford Museum

The Mitford Museum This North Carolina literary landmark, founded by # 1 New York Times Bestselling Author Jan Karon, offers exhibits, programs, and a bookstore.

Our mission is to examine, document, and celebrate the American small-town ethos and support the legendary musical, literary, art, and folk cultures of the North Carolina mountains and foothills.

𝐌𝐒𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬.

One of the greatest joys of the museum is welcoming visitors from near and far who share a love for Mitford. Clockwise from Top:

β€’ Melissa and Marianne traveled all the way from Washington state with their families after reading the Mitford Series. The two devoted fans picked up the CD set of β€œTo Be Where You Are” to enjoy together during their travels.

β€’ Amee from Ohio visited, along with Jill and Kim from North Carolina. Amee, a professional chef, loves sharing the OMC with friends and family, and Jill is excited to begin her own Mitford journey after purchasing β€œAt Home in Mitford” during her visit.

β€’ Congratulations to Patti and Chuck of Pennsylvania, who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with us! Chuck is a photographer, and Patti has even created a Mitford Snowman quilt for friends.

We are so grateful for each person who walks through our doors.
Come see us soon! The Mitford Museum is open Wednesday–Saturday from 10 AM–4 PM. Plan your visit at TheMitfordMuseum.org/explore.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who served our country. Featured here are military artifacts from the Mitford Museum collection. They are meaningful reminders of service, sacrifice, and the stories that connect generations. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

We are honored to be featured in The News-Topic's recent article highlighting how The Mitford Museum & Discovery Center continues to welcome visitors from near and far to Hudson, North Carolina.

The article shares: "In addition to the museum, there's more to come. Construction of The Mitford Discovery Center, located across the street from The Mitford Museum, will begin soon. The new building will expand the museum's programming and create new opportunities for guests of all ages to learn, gather, and explore.”

Thank you to The News-Topic and writer Ann Everhardt-Smith for shining a light on our museum, our hometown, and the lasting impact of Jan Karon's stories. We are deeply appreciative of your support.

The Family Who Shaped Me.
Episode Two.

At the age of 35, he was the handsome town bachelor with a bay mare, a fine carriage, a successful business, and a yen to settle down. Just like grown kids today, Monroe was still living at homeβ€”meals cooked, socks washed, no rent to pay. Actually, it was his mother, my great-grandmother Nancy Cloer, who told him it was time to grow up and move out. He did. But not til he met a beautiful young country girl from Hudson, NC.

Fannie Belle Bush grew up in an unpainted house with a swept yard and a passel of siblings. They entertained themselves by walking from farm to farm, enjoying tea parties and card games. Shades of Jane Austen! They would pick flowers along the way and present tussie mussies, Google that, to their hostess and her mama. In the summer, everyone grew watermelons of different varieties, and there they went, trooping over hill and dale, to enjoy each other’s watermelons. Try that on your iPhone.

I have no idea what possessed my grandfather, Monroe, to take his fine buggy along all those pitted, unpaved country roads, but one day there he was, in the country at a skating party on a local lake, and there was Fannie Belle Bush, as pretty as a speckled pup, with a broken umbrella handle. That umbrella handle was the only thing my grandfather ever β€˜fixed’ in his lifeβ€”he tied his nice, clean, starched handkerchief around the handle and handed it back to her like he had hung the moon.

They married in 1916. Mama was 23.

Did they live happily ever after?
I hate to tell you this, but they most certainly did not. Nope. Not good. He had terrible bouts of depression and could be violent. What did Fannie do through 50 plus years of this? Carried on. Made it through. Prayed night and day. Hung the wash. Baked the biscuits. Fried the chicken. Milked the cows. Raised two grandchildren. Trusted God.

To add a little color, though there was plenty of it, Monroe’s brother, G, drank heavily, played pro baseball, and drove his wife to su***de. His brother Jim ran a printing press, regularly brought bedbugs to our house, and carried a revolver at all times. And that’s just for starters. You should hear about the rest of the family who shaped me!

As far as we know, there are no horse thieves in our DNA. We can do way better than horse thieves…like the great uncle on my maternal side who found his wife with the Jewel Tea man….

Mitford Moments.

From near and far, visitors continue to find their way β€œhome” to Mitford, and we are always grateful to welcome each one through our doors.
Pictured clockwise from top:

✨ A joyful group visit from Just Older Youth (JOY) of Mtn. Road Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina.

✨ Sandy Cable has a special connection to this building. Not only did she attend school here, she later taught here, and her children attended school here as well. She and Amy Cable of Hudson, North Carolina, are also longtime Mitford fans, making their visit especially meaningful.

✨ Pamela and her husband flew in all the way from Jacksonville, Florida, just to visit The Mitford Museum. Pamela shared that she has hoped to make the trip ever since we opened, and finally made it happen! They spent a weekend in Blowing Rock and celebrated their love for the Mitford series along the way.

Every guest brings a story, and we love hearing how Mitford has touched lives across the country. Thank you for sharing your moments with us.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐒𝐧 𝐌𝐒𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝.

There’s something especially fitting about a teapot and a spring day in Mitford.

This week, we’re delighted to share a charming piece from the museum’s collection: the Victorian Chintz Teapot – Pink, crafted by Burleigh Pottery in Staffordshire, England. Its delicate floral pattern, drawn from a 19th-century print, was reproduced between 2006 and 2010 in both pink and blue, capturing a timeless elegance that feels right at home in Mitford.

This particular teapot holds an even sweeter story. It was gifted to Jan Karon by Victoria Magazine during her time as a Writer in Residence.

As we look ahead to the Mitford Spring Tea on May 16th, we can’t wait to welcome all of our ticket holders for what promises to be a beautiful afternoon. If you do not have tickets yet, we have just a few available on our website at themitfordmuseum.org/mitford-spring-tea.

The next time you visit the Museum, look for this beautiful piece in our exhibits.

Today, we celebrate the quiet strength, gentle wisdom, and steadfast love that shape our lives in ways both big and small. Like the women of Mitford, mothers have a way of making a house feel like home, through warm meals, listening hearts, and grace that carries us through every season.

Whether you’re remembering a mother, honoring one, or living out that calling yourself, may your day be filled with simple joys, meaningful moments, and peace that lingers long after the day is done.

With gratitude and warmth, Happy Mother’s Day.
