Our beloved Thunderduck, the clear standout kid favorite at Hangar Hangout Days and the Wings Over Houston 2025 Family Chalet, has been in need of a little sprucing up. So one of our members, known affectionately as Hellcat Bombzaway, stepped up to the challenge!

Safety and aesthetics have been addressed throughout the project: the anti-slip grips on both wings have been replaced and clearly marked, and all sharp edges, especially around egress points where little hands might grab, have been secured. The panels under children’s legs, once sources of pinch points and rough edges, have also been smoothed and reinforced.

The restoration includes functional upgrades as well. A missing fuel gauge instrument was located and reinstalled, and all labeling has been replaced. The hand grips were sanded down, sandblasted, and repainted to match the wing caps with the help of cadet B. Griffin.

A major visual improvement came with the removal of stained and faded upholstery, which had been previously held in place with duct tape. The new upholstery is bright and kid-friendly, securely stapled, and matched to the handle grips and wing caps. It’s also protected by a weather-resistant plastic cover, ensuring easier transport and long-term durability. On the port side, the faux exhaust—once glued on and lost—has been properly reattached using screws for permanence.

Thunderduck’s transformation is ongoing, but it’s already shaping up to be safer, more fun, and more engaging for all ages!

Recently added to our museum is a rare WWII-era Navy “handkerchief chart,” a compact rayon acetate survival map issued in April 1944 for pilots operating in the Pacific. Designed for emergency sea landings and raft navigation, these charts were the result of a 1943 effort by the Army Air Forces and Navy to coordinate production and avoid duplication. Our featured chart (NACI-HO S8A-10-1) covers North Central New Guinea and includes ocean current data for winter months. The reverse side details the Northwest Admiralty Islands & Bismarck Archipelago. These maps were vital tools for downed airmen, often accompanied by instruction sheets on how to navigate using them.

Do you know why they were printed on rayon and not paper?

Recently, the Houston Wing hosted 37 fifth graders from Saint Mark’s Lutheran School for a fun and educational field trip. Students rotated through four hands-on stations, including a museum tour focused on the WWII home front and Women at War, a lesson in flight mechanics using the PT-19, a chance to climb into the cockpit of an AT-6, and a parachute jump simulation from the C-60 using modified backpacks.

Special thanks to our dedicated volunteers who made this experience possible. If you have a group that would like a tour, message our page!

With all the pilot training we've been doing in the BT-13, she needed an oil change, which takes a little bit more effort than it might on your car. Any guesses on how much oil the Pratt & Whitney R-985 holds?

Here's a update on our beloved N3N which is getting some TLC, including a new heat shield and exhaust.

Our Story

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is the premier Warbird organization, with over 10,000 members, the CAF operates more than 164 vintage aircraft which are distributed to 80 units in 24 states for care and operation. The Houston Wing was formed in 1978 to support the mission of flying aircraft from 1939 to 1945. We honor our greatest generation and teach future generations about the sacrifices that were made for the freedom of people the world over. We currently have five flyable aircraft and have one aircraft under restoration. The Houston Wing is made up of over 140 members who volunteer their time and resources to keep these majestic planes flying. We perform at airshows across the country and flyovers for local sporting events, Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. We are based at West Houston Airport, in Houston, Texas, USA. Our CAF assigned aircraft are: Lockheed C-60A "Lodestar" North American AT-6 "Texan" Consolidated-Vultee BT-13 "Valiant" Naval Aircraft Factory N3N "Yellow Peril" Fairchild PT-19A "Cornell" and a major restoration project, a North American L‑17 Navion
