The History Museums at HCU Museum of Southern History
Museum of American Architecture and Decorative Arts

The Museum of Southern History provides a window into the South during the mid-1800s. The Museum of Southern History showcases room settings, clothing, fine furnishings, uniforms, tools and weapons that give visitors a sense of how settlers rebuilt their lives after the Civil War. The Museum of American Architecture and Decorative Arts showcases Texas between 1830 and 1930, featuring arts from the

days when Houston was merely a frontier settlement. The Museum also includes the Schissler Miniature Furnitue Collection and the Theo Redwood Blank Doll Collection, one of the finest in the country.

The University Museums will be closed May 23 - 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

Collections Spotlight!
This Easter season, we are showcasing a 19th century porcelain sculpture, "Il Cenacola," by Italian artist Giuseppe Fabris (1790-1860). Fabris studied art in Vicenze and Milan before completing his training in Rome. The sculpture was donated to the university museum by Mr. and Mrs. Peter B. Vanderhoef in 1969.
"Il Cenacola" is Fabris’s representation of the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with his Twelve Apostles in Jerusalem before he was betrayed, arrested, tried, and crucified on Good Friday. Christians commemorate The Last Supper on Holy Thursday during Easter Week.
For centuries, artists have created depictions of this event in a variety of media. The best known of these is Leonarda da Vinci’s 1490s masterpiece mural "The Last Supper" at the Convent of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan, Italy.
"Il Cenacola" is on view in the lobby of the Museum of American Architecture & Decorative Arts in the MCAC. Please stop by soon to see it in person!
