Taking inspiration from native plants and how the bayous have played an important role in the city's history, this mural celebrates nature and documents the beauty of our community. It strives to inspire a culture of conservation that allows us to live our lives in harmony with nature and to grow freely, resiliently, and beautifully just like flowers do.

This project was funded in partnership with Arts District Houston and the City of Houston.

Special thanks for all of the help from my amazingly talented and hardworking assistants Sophie Taylor-Havens and Natalie Atkinson and for all of the advice and support from friends and artists Sara Kellner, Alex Irrera, Ben Volta, Michelle Angela Ortiz, Brad Carney, Phil Asbury, Nathaniel Lee, Jon Laidacker, Zambia Green, Jessica Im, Eric Okdeh, Jack Gron, Paula Puzzuole, Grace Zuniga, Claudia Peregrina and to the amazing installation crew from Pasadena Sign.

I could not have done this without the support of my family, thank you Chris, Mom, Dad, Lili, Steven, Meghan and Ale for holding down the fort while we painted for 796 hours. 😘

Wall 3: Monarch butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Around the world, people view butterflies as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. To me, the monarch butterfly is a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration and represents the dignity and resilience of migrants, and the right that all living beings have to move freely.

The geometric pattern suggests a heart shape at the center of it representing love and COURAGE.

Also a native Houston plant, the Black-eyed Susan flower represents transformation. The bright yellow halo of blossoms surrounding the dark inner core represents protection. The dark brown center of the flower encourages us to go into the dark depths of our own center within. Its golden petal-like rays extend out from the dark center reaching towards the light; and they bring the light back to the flower's dark center. This flower gives us courage to go into the unknown part of ourselves, prompting the process of inner healing to begin.

Wall 2: The design incorporates a number of natural elements, as well as geometric shapes. The content is very much inspired by nature, Zen philosophies and wabi-sabi concepts of transience. A huge part of the wabi-sabi concept is the acceptance of nature and natural processes. The elements (fire, wind, water, earth) can drastically change the qualities of both natural and man made materials. Decay, erode, develop patina: transience and imperfection. Temporality of life and the renewal process in nature, a continuum and infinite.

The enso gold circle, the beauty of imperfection. In Zen, "enso" is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. It symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and "mu" (the void). The circle is incomplete, allowing for movement and development as well as the perfection of all things.

Within the geometric pattern in the background are symbols that represent COMPASSION, empathy, gratitude, transformation, exploration, creation, our CONTRIBUTIONS.

The birds represent the connection between our inner worlds and outer reality, the wings of possibilities, freedom of flight, precision and timing, perspective, vision and individuality.

This mural has been commissioned by Caydon USA through Houston Arts Alliance. Installation of Wall 1 of 3. My goal for this mural is to raise awareness and spark conversations about what home is for us and to inspire people to CONNECT with others, experience COMPASSION (for others and ourselves), to make CONTRIBUTIONS that are meaningful and life-affirming, and have the COURAGE to tell our stories and speak our truths.

Wall 1: In this wall the geometric pattern represents the word CONNECT. The migratory birds are symbols of rootedness and flight, home and escape. The flowers are Houston native Eastern Purple Coneflowers and are butterfly magnets. The juxtaposition between the native flowers and the migrating birds is meant to remind the viewer about EMPATHY, to put aside our viewpoints and try to see things from another person's point of view.

About the Project

Over a thousand paper flowers were created with messages of freedom for the detained families at the Berks Detention Center.

As part of Michelle's moving monument entitled, “Seguimos Caminando” (We Keep Walking) honoring the mothers at Berks, we led several free paper flower workshops open to the public at the Monument Lab Research Field Office at the Barnes Foundation.

More than 100 participants that include students, educators, and families in Philadelphia made flowers that were joined with the flowers made by the mothers detained at Berks which carry messages of freedom and the continued fight against family detention.

On Wednesday, October 25th at noon, the hand dyed flowers were assembled at the north gates of City Hall to spell out the 10’x40’ word “Libertad” (Freedom/ Liberty).

The collective artwork is a creative action that was followed by a press conference led by the Shut Down Berks Coalition to put pressure on Governor Tom Wolf who has the power to shut down the center and end family detention in Pennsylvania.
