Houston Ballet is seeking a Part-Time Archive Assistant:

Houston Ballet , one of the nation's preeminent ballet companies and ballet academies, has a history spanning more than fifty years. The purpose of the Archive Project is to safeguard the legacy of Houston Ballet and implement systems that will streamline the usage, creation, and storage of archival documents across the organization. The primary components of the project are: 1) completion of inventory of the collection and implementation of a long-term project to create a searchable catalog for archival materials; 2) archival-quality digitization of prioritized analog video materials; and 3) improved systems for accessing and preserving archival materials used in the company's daily activities, including creation of manuals, workflows, and protocols.

The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center in Liberty will host real-life cowboy, author and historian J.L. "Jim" Hodges at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24. Hodges' program will explore the ancient roots of cowboys and their early days in the Gulf Coast region, along with sharing his personal experiences as a Texas ranch hand and horse trainer. Center staff will also offer a special viewing of historic records and artifacts related to Gulf Coast cowboys.

Wondering how to advocate for archives? Join AHA for a lunch & learn on August 26th @ Noon with HouArts and the SSA Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy as they talk about their advocacy initiatives and how you can get involved.

AHA! has partnered with HouArts as our local legislative advocacy arm. Marci Dallas, HouArts Project Coordinator will present on their strategic plan and how that relates to local archives and LIS/LAM workers.

AHA! is a longtime partner with Society of Southwest Archivists and their recently established Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy is focused on addressing advocacy issues voiced by archivists in our region; Committee Chair and SSA Immediate Past President, Danielle Afsordeh will share what they are working on and recent updates.

The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center presents an evening with author and historian Paul Spellman discussing his work, Spindletop Boom Days. Using first-person narratives, Spellman recreates the daily life of those involved with the discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901, a moment that echoed throughout Southeast Texas and the nation. As part of the event, Center staff will offer a special viewing of historic images and records related to the oil industry in Southeast Texas.

The Houston History Research Center, in partnership with the Houston Center for Photography (HCP), invites you to a conversation with photographer and scholar Job García on his forthcoming photo book ¡Qué Vivan las Cobijas, Cabrones! Family Artifacts and the Maintenance of Mexican Identity. Moderated by curator and cultural worker Areli Navarro Magallón, Exhibitions and Programs Coordinator at HCP, this program will explore García’s ongoing portrait series centered on the iconic Mexican cobija as both backdrop and cultural archive. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a pop-up portrait session with García, featuring the cobija backdrop from his series.

This event will take place at the Julia Ideson Building Reading Room on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 2pm.

This event is free and open to the public. Parking in the garage under the Central Library is free. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Celebrate Independence Day and at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center in Liberty!

The Center invites the community to celebrate Independence Day early on Saturday, June 27, with a fun-filled and free patriotic event commemorating the country’s 250th birthday. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. with an ongoing slate of family-friendly attractions and activities until 3:00 p.m.

Crafts for kids, engaging presentations from guest speakers, documentary film viewings, storytime for the little ones, and other entertainments are planned, as well as self-guided tours of the historical buildings on the grounds for guests of all ages.

Were the relationships between America’s founders really as dramatic as they appear in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton? In reality, they were even more intense.

In this lively and story-driven presentation, historian and podcaster Howard Dorre explores the rivalries, grudges, and political clashes that shaped the United States—from the bitterness between Benjamin Franklin and both John Adams and Abigail Adams, to the political warfare between Adams and Alexander Hamilton, to the fallout between George Washington and James Madison. Blending vivid storytelling with historical insight, this talk reveals how conflict—not consensus—helped shape the American experiment, and why the battle over Texas became one of the most consequential debates in presidential history.

Following the talk, archivists will share a selection of original materials from the library’s special collections related to U.S. presidents and American history.
