When Neon-Eye began developing 'Planet Fantastique' with the artist Ryan Besch it became clear that a textured, aged or recycled look was needed to capture his classic pulp comic ink aesthetic. Many of his rock posters utilize the French Speckle-Tone or Kraft-Tone recycled sheets. But the art should outlast us all, so museum quality archival cotton rag became the starting point. On press Lady Lazarus started experimenting to develop a technique building 4 layers of watery transparent amber tones, resembling foxing in the end. A true archivists nightmare! Once the sheets were 'ruined' and dry layers of rich transparent fluorescent inks captured the tones and helped the image pop off the page. Ryan created a blended balance of warms and cools drawing the viewer right into his dreamy landing gone wrong. This piece is currently on view Ao5 Gallery through August 29th • Artwork created by Ryan Besch
