New works from Terry Hagiwara!
A native of Japan and a resident of Houston, Terry began taking ceramic classes from Bill Dennard at Glassel School of Art, MFAH, in ‘89. Before that he had never played with mud-water-and-fire, even though he grew up in Kyushu, Japan, famous for its many ceramic sites such as Arita, Imari, Nabeshima, Karatsu, Takatori, Agano, etc.
Terry works with high-fire stonewares, sometimes firing with wood, but more often using the raku firing technique. For his raku works, Terry uses glazes, whether metallic copper or crackle white, in simple geometric surface designs. He enjoys the challenge of creating precise and consistent work in what can be considered the somewhat volatile kiln environment of raku.
