Well folks, it's time to oil the cabin again and we are looking for volunteers this Saturday the 17th to help us with this fun task. Please bring good work gloves and dress appropriately!

We will start at 10am and will serve pizza afterwards for everyone that comes and helps!

Back in the 1980s and 90s this old threshing machine added some downtown ambiance in Hotchkiss as it rested in a lot next to the old town hall (NE corner of Second and East Bridge), which was originally the Bank of the North Fork. The First State Bank of Hotchkiss built two new buildings in the late 1990s on the lots to the east of the building and the thresher was moved elsewhere.

Crawford is named for George Addison Crawford who was passing through and mentioned to someone that a spot on the Smith Fork below the present municipality would be a good place for a town. Crawford, who had been elected the Governor of Kansas, had not served due to some election irregularities and his developing tuberculosis, and like many set out for a better climate. He kept moving and help found the City of Delta and then the City of Grand Junction where he finally died of tuberculosis in 1891.

This was Dave Connolly's Treasure House antiques and collectibles store in the 1970s. The unique wooden quanoset building was constructed in 1936 as the Princess Theatre. Connolly, who served as a trustee and as mayor, converted the old theater into his antiques business. Connolly died in 1988. The building was demolished in 2000 and is now the site of the Creamery Arts Center Park.

The museum will be open this Friday in conjunction with the second Friday art walk. We will be offering free admission from 5-8pm. Volunteers will be dressed in period clothing doing dramatizations, and there is also a self guided walking map tour of bridge street!

Hotchkiss Oil Boom Fizzles

The Duke Brothers set up a oil drilling rig on Oak Mesa in 1915 and had drilled about 4,000 feet with no luck. The actual drilling may have been done by Lloyd Blackwell and Horace Duke with the brothers providing financing and management. George Duke reportedly finally hired a geologist to give them advice and the advice that came was “try drilling somewhere where there is a chance of hitting oil”. The drilling project was started after the discovery of a natural gas seep in the area. Coal was mined for years at the Burdick Mine in the same area of Oak Mesa above Hotchkiss.
