We wanted to share some valuable information from the county. Please feel free to share our post.

Schools have been closed until further notice.

If you need shelter, the Madison Early College (5734 US 25-70 Hwy., Marshall) is the site for most of the county. They are not a food distribution site.

Food and water supplies are being brought into the county by helicopter, beginning yesterday. These supplies are being routed to your area volunteer fire department to move them closer to each community. You can pick up there.

Beginning tomorrow (Monday), the Mashburn office of the Hot Springs Health Program will be open daily from 9-4. You do not need to be a patient to be seen by them. If you are out of important daily medication, please bring your empty container with dosage information, if possible, to Mashburn and they will work to help with refills. The Hot Springs branch of the HSHP will also be open tomorrow by 10am for area residents.

Residents trying to connect with family members may call NC 211 (or 1-888-892-1162 if calling from out-of-state) to report missing loved ones.

North Carolina has officially received a Major Disaster Declaration, making individuals in Madison County eligible for Individual Assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Individual Assistance provides financial aid and services to eligible individuals and households that have been affected by a disaster to assist with the recovery process. Individuals can officially begin applying for Individual Assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or by calling the application phone number at 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585) between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST.

The lovely Blue-faced Meadowhawk (Sympetrum ambiguum). They come out in the late summer and fall. They live in seasonal woodland ponds, like overgrown farm ponds. They perch around the edge, near the shade. Their blueish flanks take a ghostly hue when darting in and out of the shadows. We have at least 5 Sympetrum species living here, but all quite different.

Gonolobus suberosus aka Angle Pod. The pod is one of the coolest most pleasing shapes. It is one of the climbing milkweed plants. We have right here in Hot Springs, Gonolobus suberosus and Matelea obliqua.

These little trapdoor spiders are creepy and cute. They don’t seem to know or care about being held or picked up. That’s a contrast to some spiders that really know immediately when they are being touched or handled and don’t like it. Trapdoor spiders are little cousins to tarantulas. They are usually underground in their tidy tunnels.

These are two species of River Cruisers: Swift River Cruiser and Allegheny River Cruiser (Macromia illinoiensis and M. alleghaniensis). Beautiful and fascinating with iridescent green eyes. The nymphs are powerful predators. They eat smaller dragonfly nymphs and damselfly nymphs and other invertebrates. The lower lip is adapted into a prehensile seizing limb which grabs prey and holds it and pulls it into the mandibles which resemble those of crabs: pointed and jagged for shredding. As adults they patrol territories along rivers and forest roads and meadows, flying territorial “beats” back and forth. The adults eat tiny gnat sized prey which they catch and eat on the wing. They are peerless in flight, possessing lightning reflexes and maneuverability.
