The HHA Annual Summer Picnic drew a wonderful crowd at the 1790 Meeting House on Sunday, August 9th. Thank you to all our members for coming out, sharing such delicious food, and cheering on our grill master, Don Panciera, whose burgers and dogs are always a hit. Even in the heat and humidity, everyone enjoyed the camaraderie, the beautiful grounds, the gorgeous new shutters, and most of all, the open museum. Former HHA President, Richard Prescott, even rang the meeting house bell to let all know that the museum was open.

The museum is open every Sunday from 10–2 through October 11th. Come explore the displays and dive into Hopkinton’s history. Next year we’ll be refreshing the exhibits to celebrate the HHA’s 70th anniversary, so be sure to enjoy the USA 250th anniversary collection while it’s still here.

Until then, enjoy the last gasp of summertime in Hopkinton!

This is Wood River Branch Railroad Locomotive, the Wincheck. The engineer in the cab is Charles Hoxsie; the fireman on the fence center is Ray C. Nichols. The others are unknown. Wood River Branch Railroad connected Hope Valley with the outside world from 1872, when it was chartered, until 1937 when it was sold.

Rain! During the flood of 1886, rain and snow fell for three days through most of New England. In Hope Valley, the Wood River flooded to a gage height of 12.4 feet. All of the buildings pictured here were destroyed in 1909 when the Nichols and Langworthy Machine Shop burned.

This beautiful summer photo of the 1790 Meeting House was taken just a few days ago — and we’re so excited to share it with you. If you look closely, you’ll see our gorgeous new shutters, made possible by a heartfelt and generous gift from Barbara and Bill Capalbo of Hopkinton, RI.

Barbara was not only a long time member and officer of the Hopkinton Historical Association — she was a dear friend whose love for local history shaped so much of what we do. Her legacy now lives on in these stunning replicas of the original shutters installed on the Meeting House in the 1800s. Every time the sun hits them, we’re reminded of her kindness and dedication.

We still have several weeks left in our open house season, and the Museum is open on Sundays from 10–2. This year’s exhibits feature Hopkinton samplers from the 1800s and a special commemoration of America’s 250th birthday. We’d love to see you — stop by, say hello, and enjoy a piece of Hopkinton history with us.

Thank you to all the wonderful golfers and contributors to the 2nd Annual Hopkinton Historical Association Golf Tournament fundraiser. The event took place on Saturday, July 18th, at the Wood River Golf Club in Hopkinton, RI. The attendance and conditions were perfect, and the rain held off until the end. Teams had a great time in completing the 18-hole course, competing for team placement, and also challenging themselves at the 50/50 betting hole. Along with prizes, raffles and a terrific lunch, all had a great day which benefited the restoration of the 1790 Meeting House, preservation of Museum artifacts, and Association programs and workshops.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary! Mr. and Mrs. George H. Nichols celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1904. They were married in 1854 and lived on the corner of Mechanic St. and Main St. in Hope Valley where they raised their family. Their house was razed many years ago to build the Sherman Block which is now gone as well.

Susanna Witter, born in Hope Valley in 1767 saw George Washington as he traveled through our area during the Revolutionary War. She later married Amos Langworthy and was the mother of Josiah and Joseph Langworthy.
