Betty Liljestrand on the kitchen terrace, 1984. Cutting up avocado (a favorite treat) for her little dog, Puka, Mele the Doberman, and Snowy the cat. The original Ossipoff designed table, and the set of milk stools were still here in those days. Ossipoff designed a number of outdoor furniture pieces for the house using scrap lumber from the house construction.

Mahalo to everyone who joined us for Listening to the Land—an evening that reminded us how deeply design can be rooted in place, care, and collaboration.

We’re incredibly grateful to Greg Warner and for taking the time to present such a thoughtful and inspiring conversation at Liljestrand House. Their work—and the values behind it—beautifully reflect a shared commitment to stewardship, craft, and a deep respect for Hawaiʻi’s land and culture.

To all who attended, your presence helped make the evening feel both meaningful and alive. We’re honored to continue creating space for conversations like this at the Liljestrand House. A special thank you to the volunteers who made the program possible; to for their donation of Kewalo’s Cream Ale; and to Craig Williston .hawaii for the beautiful event photography.

We are excited to present “Listening to the Land,” a very special evening of conversation on Thursday, March 26.

Interior designer Nicole Hollis, principal of and architect Greg Warner, partner at explore how contemporary architecture and interiors in Hawaiʻi can grow from a careful reading of place rather than imitation. Working closely with artists, landscape architects, and skilled makers, material choices and patterns of daily life help shape each decision. The work is approached as a shared act of stewardship, attentive to the land and the people who care for it.

On January 31, the Foundation presented “Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future: A Collections Partnership Between the Liljestrand Foundation and the Huntington Library.” We are deeply grateful to The Huntington Library for its partnership and stewardship, and to curators Li Wei Yang and Erin Chase for sharing their insights and care in bringing such a wonderful presentation to life.

Founded in 1919, The Huntington is among the world’s leading independent research libraries, safeguarding millions of manuscripts, rare books, photographs, and ephemera. As home to the Liljestrand Family Papers—and soon the broader family archive documenting the architectural history of Liljestrand House and the lives of Howard and Betty Liljestrand—the collaboration with the Liljestrand Foundation ensures this legacy is preserved and shared for generations to come.

We were especially honored to have three members of the Liljestrand family in attendance: Foundation President Shan Liljestrand, Brianna Lawrence Liljestrand, and Wendla Liljestrand. Their presence made the evening all the more meaningful.
