General Jimmy Doolittle Interview

Just a reminder! We have two events with Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, granddaughter of General Jimmy Doolittle, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid coming up later this month. On Monday, April 17th, we have a special school program from 10:00am-11:00am and on Tuesday, April 18th at 2:30pm, a hangar talk with Ms. Hoppes, followed by a book signing and reception. Our popular summer youth programs are now open for registration! We have a variety of options available for kids of all ages. For grades 3-5, we have Explorers Club: Eyes on the Sky. For grades 6-8, Flight School has been upgraded to Flight School 2.0 and is now a full 5-days! Flight School alumni are invited to return for a brand new experience. Finally, for ages 13-15 and Flight School alumni, we have Aviation Adventure! Registration for all three camps includes a program t-shirt, as well as lunch and snacks for the day (meals and overnight lodging are also included with Aviation Adventure).

More events coming in April! To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle (Tokyo) Raid, we will host Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, granddaughter of Jimmy Doolittle, who led the pivotal Tokyo Raid that changed the course of WWII.

On April 17th, we will hold Calculated Risk: Jimmy Doolittle and the Tokyo Raid, a special youth program for schools and student groups. The event is free and teachers who register will receive a FREE copy of one of Hoppes's books as well as a curriculum to use before or after the event. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Additional information is available on our website.

On April 18th, the Museum will host a Hangar Talk with Jonna Doolittle Hoppes. She will discuss her grandfather's legacy and the historic Tokyo Raid. There will be a book signing and reception following the presentation. The event is FREE with admission and free to military and military families with a valid ID. Registration is not required, however seating will be first come, first served.

From 9:30-12:30, come join in on the fun with kite making, story time under the wings of our aircraft and kite flying with a specialist! All ages are welcome. We will have several family-friendly activities, including Design Your Own Nose Art, a selfie station and more. Several of our aircraft will be open for families to explore, there will be flight suits and helmets to try on in our selfie station, and in honor of Women's History Month, Rosie the Riveter, Cornelia Fort and Amelia Earhart will make an appearance! We will be hosting Explorers Club, "Cleared for Takeoff" the week of Spring Break: March 20th - 23rd. This is a four-day STEM program for students in grades 3-5. Participants will be introduced to Daniel Bernoulli and Isaac Newton, engineer a flying technology using the 4 forces of flight, design and build an operational airport, create and launch kites using the properties of flight, and more. In honor of African American History Month, Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor will be hosting a Hangar Talk on Saturday, February 4th with WWII Tuskegee Airman, Colonel Charles E. McGee. Colonel McGee fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and holds the record for the highest three-war total of fighter combat missions of any pilot in the United States Air Force history. Colonel McGee began his military service as one of the Tuskegee Airmen in the 332nd Fighter Group.

Also present at the Hangar Talk will be WWII Tuskegee Airman Philip Baham. Baham served as a crew chief for the 337th Composite Group at Tuskegee Army Air Field. Baham is a dedicated volunteer at Pacific Aviation Museum, sharing his story with visitors as a greeter in the lobby of Hangar 37.

Attention teachers and homeschool parents! On Friday, February 3rd, we will be hosting a special FREE program for school groups in honor of African American History Month. Our featured guest will be decorated WWII Tuskegee Airman Pilot, Colonel Charles E. McGee.

The Tuskegee Airmen were an all African American squadron who overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of WWII.

Colonel McGee will speak to students about the importance of remaining positive when faced with adversity, and the importance of hard work and getting a good education.

Not only is the program itself free, we will also cover the cost of bus transportation for school groups who register in advance.

Pearl Harbor Youth Day - Special Event

We've got a number of events happening next week in honor of the 75th Commemoration of Pearl Harbor, including Pearl Harbor Youth Day on Saturday, December 10th. This event, focusing on the experiences of young people during World War II, is FREE for visitors aged 18 and under! Our featured speaker is Graham Salisbury, author of Under the Blood Red Sun. He will be here to speak and do a book/DVD signing, following an abbreviated screening of the film. Other activities include student displays, swing dancing demonstrations, lei and paper crane making, open cockpits and more! Some of our Barnstormers are in Maui this week! We'll be visiting schools all over the island with our P-40 flight simulator, wind tunnel and science experiments to teach 6th graders about the science behind aviation. This is a free program for 6th grade classrooms and we're always excited when we have the opportunity to take the program to the outer islands.

75th Commemoration Event Highlight: Pearl Harbor Youth Day

Pearl Harbor Youth Day offers a unique opportunity for families and visitors of all ages to explore the lessons and legacy of WWII through special presentations, exhibits, and hands-on activities. This event focuses on youth to engage and educate them about the history of Pearl Harbor, and the impact on young people in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific. If you enjoyed Living History Day, you'll love this event!

Featured activities include:

- Special screening of “Under the Blood Red Sun,” followed by a
presentation and Q & A session with author Graham Salisbury.
- Historical exhibits designed and created by local high school
students
- Thematic tours of the Museum
- Costumed interpreters and historical demonstrations

75th Commemoration Event Highlight: Blackened Canteen Youth Symposium

The Blackened Canteen Youth Symposium highlights the story and lessons of the Blackened Canteen Ceremony, which commemorates the friendship, honor, and reconciliation borne out of the horror of WWII. The Symposium will address themes of conflict, forgiveness, reconciliation, and peacemaking that are reflected in the story of the Blackened Canteen.

Featured speakers include: Dr. Hiroya Sugano, who has hosted the ceremony in Japan since 1972; Jerry Yellin, WWII pilot and author of the book, The Blackened Canteen; and students from Nagaoka, Japan, and Kamehameha Schools. Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng will serve as moderator. Japanese and English interpretation will be provided during the event.

This event is free and open to the public. Teachers at public, private, or charter schools who register their classes for the Youth Symposium will receive The Blackened Canteen classroom curriculum and an autographed copy of the book. Additionally, the cost of bus transportation to the event will be provided for registered school groups.

Discover Pearl Harbor is a two-day, one-night program (December 8th/9th) for youth ages 12-15 that combines engaging, aviation-related STEM activities within the historically significant context of the Pearl Harbor sites. The cry, "Remember Pearl Harbor," remains a vital theme, as it is now a call to action for youth to learn these timeless stories of courage, resiliency, and innovation, and to use the lessons of WWII to create a more peaceful world.

Some of our Barnstormers will be taking off this afternoon to head to Maui! We'll be visiting schools all over the island this week (and later in November) with our P-40 flight simulator, wind tunnel and science experiments to teach 6th graders about the science behind aviation.
