Rush was out spearfishing with friends when he came across this beautiful 5.31 lb Kumu. A catch this size is incredibly rare, and he almost passed on printing it—until his mentor encouraged him to go for it. Still in high school, Rush chose my basic gyotaku option, which is designed to keep things simple and affordable.

The basic option allows both kids and adults who can’t go the premium route—whether due to budget or simply being in a season where art isn’t a priority—to still preserve their special catch. It features clean, minimal coloring and detailing, while still honoring the fish and the memory behind it.

Congratulations, Rush! I hope you and your ‘ohana treasure this piece for years to come.

This was a rare and meaningful project, a traditional black & white gyotaku, created to honor a truly special catch. The fish is an Okinawan Knifejaw, a striking species known for its ugly face and powerful jaw (uses it crush crabs and other shellfish). It was taken on the Big Island of Hawai‘i using a Hawaiian Sling (3-prong) while spearfishing with friends by . What makes this piece even more memorable is that the catch went on to become a world record! I worked to capture every detail exactly as the diver remembered it, preserving not just the form of the fish but the story and moment behind it. Congratulations, and thank you for trusting me with such a once-in-a-lifetime memory. 🤙

and his wife's lucky day with a solid day of fishing. His wife caught this 9.5lbs Mu on a tako leg. It's such an epic story and one to tell for generations to come via gyotaku.

Print vs photo

With every premium gyotaku print I do, I aim to mimic precise details of each subject customers bring me. Here is an example of an Aweoweo I did for Matt on black cloth with acrylic ink.

Those of you trying to improve your gyotaku, don't stop looking to improve not matter how long you been doing it for or how good you think you are. There is always room for growth and improvement. Happy printing y'all 🤙

Patience doesn’t sound like much fun. And to be truthful, sometimes, it’s not. With the age of iPads/cell phones in the world, we don’t always have to be patient. For example, we are able to stream our favorite TV shows on our cell phones, watch movies on demand, go to restaurants where food is served hot and fast, among many other things.

I am trying to help my son understand the fundamentals of life lessons from art. Although he is only 2, he understands that Daddy takes a long time painting to make a piece like this one for

Mahalo for waiting Kevin 🤙
