An interview with him is currently part of the “Crossing Boundaries” show at @uhsoashengallery and one of his buildings is featured in this years #docomomotourday. 🏝Aloha modernists!!! Today is #GivingTuesday and this year we are participating in @docomomous “#DOCOGAMES”, it is a day-long, bracket-based fundraising tournament featuring 9 “Nine” Modernist Architecture fans all over the country fighting to save a modern site they love and stand for. The Docomomo US/ Hawaii Chapter supports the City’s interest in developing a vision that serves to enhance Honolulu’s vibrant culture and arts scene, but stresses the importance of preserving the modern design legacy and integrity of the campus. The Blaisdell Center site, as a cultural touchstone, has the potential to improve physical linkages within the neighborhood, by connecting well-established resources such as the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Art School, a block away, to the dynamic and burgeoning Kaka’ako neighborhood nearby. Improving the activation and variety of outdoor gathering spaces would also benefit the site.

Representing Docomomo US/Hawai’i is director and design consultant Michael Ikaika Kaneshiro Chou @the_modernislander. The Neal Blaisdell Center will be forever changed with a new façade, amends will be made to the scalloped, circular complex The Arena. While its exterior features will be preserved, the interiors will be overhauled to better suit hosting performances and rock concerts.

Despite this change, a donation today will help us get to the second round tomorrow. And amount from $1, $3, $5, $10 will make a difference. If you would like The Blaisdell to continue to the next step; round #1 at 1pm and round #3 at 5pm.

This year for Giving Tuesday, Docomomo US will launch its first ever battle for architectural survival with the “Doco Games.” The #DocoGames is a day-long tournament that features sixteen of Docomomo US’ biggest supporters fighting to save a building they love.
It’s that time of the year again, and @docomomo Hawaii will be represented and competing at this year’s “Hunger Games” of Modernism: “DOCO GAMES”
We need your help in raising funds to uphold Docomomo US main mission and stand to protect and preserve modern buildings across the nation.
The Neil Blaisdell Arena and Center is no exception. Built between the years of 1955 to 1969, the landmarks spans an entire city block and was designed by the architectural firm of Merril, Simms & Roehrig, as well as Adrian Wilson & Associates who designed its Arena. Its circular Arena (where Elvis performed), at Kapi’olani Blvd. & Ward Ave., has got an amazing “Spaceship Googie” sensibility and can hold around 8,000 seats for concerts and sporting events. The King Street side Concert Hall portion of the Center – which holds a couple of thousand seats for Symphony, Opera and Theater-goers – has a more refined rectilinear appearance that is softened by elongated arches which flank its main entrance. The Neal S. Blaisdell Center is a major modernist achievement in a city full of modernist achievements yet it’s currently under threat of a proposed redevelopment plan.

This 1963, Hal Whitaker designed home has been in the clients family since 1968. Welch and Weeks’ goal was to bring back the home to its original midcentury splendor. The project included remodel kitchen, dining room, master bedroom and bath, guest bathrooms, new home office and laundry room. A new pool house that include bathroom and beach toy storage, new windows and paint, reworked all exterior hardscape along with new landscaping (by "Pacific Outdoor Living" of Honolulu) completed the exterior work.
