: On October 7, 1943, the USS S-44 (SS-155) was lost off the Kuril Islands during her fifth war patrol.

Commanded by LCDR Francis E. Brown, S-44 made vital contributions to the Allied cause—most notably during her third war patrol in 1942, when she successfully torpedoed and sank the 10,000-ton Japanese heavy cruiser Kako.

On the night of October 7, S-44 made radar contact on what was thought to be a small merchant vessel. After surfacing to engage, she came under heavy fire from a Japanese es**rt ship. Unable to dive due to critical hits, the order was given to abandon ship. Only two crewmen survived the sinking, enduring nearly two years as POWs before being liberated at the end of the war.

Today, we honor the extraordinary courage, service, and sacrifice of LCDR Brown and the crew of USS S-44.

Designed during the Cold War, the SUBROC (Submarine Rocket) was one of the most unique anti-submarine weapons in naval history. Once ejected underwater from a standard torpedo tube, the rocket ignited, broke through the ocean surface, and flew at supersonic speeds toward its target before dropping its warhead back into the water for detonation.
