Experience the culmination of Wehiwehi Cohort 2 at Shangri La.

Join us for an evening of live performance, artist dialogue, open museum access, and reception as Shangri La transforms into a site for connection, reflection, and cultural exchange.

After ten days of creative exchange, experimentation, and collaboration, six Native Hawaiian artists will share works developed during the residency through performance, conversation, and gathering across Shangri La’s creative campus.

Rooted in Indigenous knowledge and shaped through contemporary performance and emerging technologies, Wehiwehi creates space for artists to build community, take creative risks, and imagine new futures for Native Hawaiian storytelling.

Building on the success of its inaugural year, Shangri La welcomes the return of Wehiwehi Cohort 2 — a residency bringing together six Native Hawaiian performing artists exploring the intersection of Indigenous practice, performance, and emerging technology.

From June 17–27, artists spanning dance, music, theater, poetry, and multidisciplinary practice will gather at Shangri La to build community, develop new work, and engage in creative exchange rooted in Native Hawaiian knowledge and contemporary expression.

Supported by the Doris Duke Foundation’s Technologies and Performing Arts initiative, Wehiwehi invests in bold artistic experimentation while creating space for pilina, collaboration, and innovation across generations and disciplines.

The residency culminates in two public programs:
📍 Wehiwehi Artist Showcase at Bishop Museum — Friday, June 19
📍 Wehiwehi Residency Performance at Shangri La — Saturday, June 27

Follow along for artist features, behind-the-scenes moments, and program announcements throughout the residency.

Last week, the Shangri La team participated in coral restoration efforts in Maunalua Bay for the second time this year, supporting hands-on conservation work.

The work resulted in the biopsy of 40 corals of opportunity for stress testing. The most thermally resilient of these bunch will be propagated for outplanting in Maunalua Bay this year.

The Coral Resilience Lab at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, Mālama Maunalua, Kuleana Coral Restoration, NOAA, and DAR work together to restore coral reefs across the Hawaiian Islands.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from those leading coral restoration efforts here in Hawaiʻi and to support community-led environmental stewardship and put into practice the Doris Duke Foundation’s commitment to nature and environment.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month at Shangri La 🌿
Our Public Engagement Consultants share stories of plants from Hawaiʻi and across the Pacific, including the pū hala tree, used in traditional lauhala weaving, and the kukui tree, home to the Manu-o-Kū. These trees are more than just plants. What they grow and provide naturally inspires creativity and art, while carrying deep culture and tradition.
