Then you'll go on to The Bishop's Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts. You'll enjoy a delicious lunch in the museum's cafe. Your day begins when you meet with your excursion guide just outside your cruise ship terminal. You'll be shown to comfortable, and air conditioned transportation for the scenic ride to the Iolani Palace. This palace has been lovingly restored to its original grandeur and is the only structure of its kind in the world. You will then begin to walk through this magnificent structure accompanied by a guide who will inform you of the history and give you details about the rooms, and artwork, that you will see. The Iolani Palace is built in what is known as American Florentine style and it is the only structure of its type anywhere in the world. It has quite the complicated history as it was originally built as a home for King Kamahameha in 1845 until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. The original name was Hale Ali'I, meaning both House of the Chiefs and Royal Hawk. King Kalakaua, the first monarch to travel around the world, visited Europe where he noticed the grand palaces owned by their monarchs and he dreamed of a royal palace that was fit for a modern Hawaiian king as well. The original structure was razed and the building you'll see was completed in 1882 and cost over $340,000.00 USD, which was quite the fortune in those days. Another interesting fact is that the Iolani Palace had electricity and telephones before these modern devices were even in the White House. You'll enjoy the impressive art work collection, including the large portrait of King Louis Phillipe of France, and one of the only koa wood pianos in existence, not to mention the impressive details for an island structure. After approximately two hours at the Iolani Palace, it will be time to board your transportation and head off to the Bishop Museum just a 15-minute drive away. This is the largest museum in Hawaii and has quite the impressive collections. The Bishop museum was originally built by Charles Reed Bishop to preserve the royal heirlooms handed down through generations to his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last of her royal family. You'll have the opportunity to see many of the artifacts used by Hawaiian royalty and enjoy visiting the world's largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts too. His original intention was to preserve the many relics and heirlooms that had been handed down through the generations. You'll enjoy time spent with a museum guide who will give you details about the collections and they are unique, diverse, and many are breathtakingly beautiful. After a period of time the Bishop Museum began to expand to hold natural historical specimens. Many of the more famed, and impressive specimens will be on display, but the museum's total holdings of natural history specimens now exceed 24 million. That's quite the expansion. Next is a tasty, traditional Hawaiian lunch in the museum's cafe. Your lunch choice will consist of Kalua pig, rice and a tossed salad or Pineapple Shoyu Chicken, rice, and a tossed salad. Vegetarians can enjoy a veggie wrap with portabella mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, red bell peppers, cucumbers and house special coleslaw. You must place your lunch preference at the time of booking. You can order beverages at an additional cost. After lunch you will go to the planetarium where you can enjoy a demonstration of Hawaiian night skies. You'll have almost a half hour to just relax and enjoy the stars. Then you'll experience a 25 minute show that includes a live lava demonstration. It is quite amazing to see when you realize just how much of Hawaii consists of ancient lava. Then you will have a guided walk through the Hawaiian Hall to see some of the displays. Afterwards, you will have time to do a bit of wandering by yourself. In all, you will have approximately 2.75 hours at the Bishop Museum. Finally, when it's time, you'll board your transportation and be returned to your Oahu Honolulu cruise ship pier.
