Hollandale native Lee DeVries and son Jordan are Albert Lea firefighters. Great grandson and great-great grandson of John DeVries who moved to Hollandale in 1922. He bought 120 acres on the east side of town and built a house and barn on top of the hill on South DeVries Ave, where Dar Bos now lives.

The Memorial Day Service will start at 9 AM at the Hollandale Cemetery south of town. At approximately 10 AM following the service and fellowship time Carol Rudie will lead a cemetery tour highlighting several veterans buried there. The Hollandale Heritage Huis would like you to join us in honoring these veterans and share meaningful history of these special people. There are too many veterans to include in one cemetery tour as there are currently 90 buried in the cemetery so you are welcome to visit the Hollandale Heritage Huis for interesting information of our Hollandale veterans. You can contact the museum via e-mail at [email protected] or call 507-320-9356. If the Memorial Day Service is moved to the Hollandale Christian Reformed Church due to weather, the cemetery tour will be postponed and held on a later date.

This photo was placed in the Souvenir Program of the Third Annual Vegetable Institute and Show of 1948. The Freeborn County National Bank and Kebble Implement Co. were trying to promote agriculture and the availability of needed equipment. The "G" Allis-Chalmer tractor was used in the Hollandale area for many years.

The Great Depression, 1929 through the late 1930's, hit the folks of Hollandale as hard as anywhere in the U.S. In fact, the Red Cross of Albert Lea come to Hollandale on a regular basis to help because there were literally people starving here. I'm looking for examples of Depression Era meals that your parents or grandparents ate; Breakfasts, Dinners, Suppers, school lunches, etc. Did you eat them when you were young also?
