All about our "Rosie the Riveter" as told by the Matzen's

Our "Rosie": Mother of Crystal Matzen on Polk Street

Born Sylvia Delsi 05/1925 in Detroit, Mi (today age 93).

Started working at the Ford River Rouge plant in 1942 (age 17) using an altered birth cert. because she wasn't 18 yet. Tore a "4" out of a newspaper and placed over her birth certificate's "5" and then took a photo copy to show Ford's Personnel Dept.
Sylvia was a bucker (held the heavy inside backer plate during riveting) on B-25 tail sections and also installed the 4" thick deicer on the tail fin. She was 5' tall and 98 lbs so was often lowered by rope inside the tail fin of the B-25 to do the rivet bucking.

She had brothers, Sam, Dick & Al in the military and not only wanted to serve her country, but help bring her brothers home safe & ASAP.

Sylvia married Herbert Tanis during the war, Herbie was a gunner in the US Navy and was first on a tanker. He survived the sinking of his tanker in the Atlantic by a Nazi torpedo. Later he was transferred to the Pacific onboard a Navy supply ship which was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese sub. It was a wonder that Crystal ever came around later in Holland, Mi.
