Today we are proud to announce the acquisition of "Gratitude of the Hunt”, the prize winning work by Fire Loom Studios, the Back Family. This exceptional piece is now on display, and we invite you to visit and experience it as part of the stories we carry forward.

“Gratitude of the Hunt”

This beaded loomed portrait expresses our gratitude for the deer that helps sustain our way of life by providing many necessities for our family’s well-being.

This portrait is a tribute to my husband& #39;s ability to provide for his family as the Creator intended. The changing of the seasons brings forth the gifts of mother earth, offering sustenance that supports our survival and strengthens our connection to the natural world.

The portrait of this male deer incorporates elements of the autumn landscape, including vibrant fall colors, woodland scenery, and traditional to***co leaves, the traditional offering made in gratitude for a successful hunt.

Materials used in this art piece- such as sinew made from the backstrap, smoked hide, deer tail, antler, and deer toes-were gathered from my husband& #39;s previous fall hunt, honoring the leader of the animals by ensuring that every part is used with respect and purpose.

The eagle soaring high in the sky represents my husband, whose traditional Mohawk name is Karonhiahere, meaning “He drifts with the clouds.” Through this portrait, I celebrate the relationship between family, sustenance, gratitude, and the teachings passed down through our Family, Culture, and Traditional teachings. - Kelly Back

🧡 Today we wear orange. Every Child Matters.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Akwesasne Cultural Center remembers the children who were taken from their families and sent to residential and boarding schools on both sides of the border. Many never came home. Those who did carried the harm with them, and so did their families and communities, including our own.

We honor the Survivors. We remember the children who didn't come home. We stand with the families still looking for answers.
