On Memorial Day, we should also remember the Black freedom fighters whose struggle for liberty began long before America fully recognized Black people as citizens or even as human beings. Men like Gabriel Prosser, Denmark Vesey, and Nat Turner understood that the first war many Black Americans faced was a war against Black existence itself.

Black people in America had to fight for freedom from slavery, fight against being re-enslaved through terror and oppression, fight for recognition of their humanity, fight for civil rights, and fight to be recognized as full American citizens under the law. Their resistance was not simply rebellion—it was a demand for human dignity, self-determination, and liberation.

Whether through organized revolt, resistance, education, military service, or civil rights activism, generations of Black Americans carried forward this long freedom struggle. Honoring these men does not diminish Memorial Day; it deepens our understanding of sacrifice and reminds us that freedom in America has often been paid for with Black courage, Black resistance, and Black lives.
