Hinsdale Historical Bicentennial Committee thanks Jack Searles for his talk on postal delivery and post offices throughout Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County and the States. Also, thank you Larry Kilmer for bringing local postal displays from over a century ago. History shined in Hinsdale last night. Thanks to all that made it happen.

"First Day Hike", sponsored by the Genesee Valley Greenway and Hinsdale Historical Society/Bicentennial Committee was a great kick off for our town's 200th birthday. Canal history, friendship and our town's swearing in of officials were done on the 1st of January. Such a delight to see so many show up for a 9:00 AM Greenway walk. Kristine, Parks Manager with the Greenway, offered bandanas for all, a "tick removal" card was accepted by Randy for the Boy Scouts, and a NYS Parks "Empire Pass" card retained and publicly available by the Hinsdale Historical Society for use in 2020; just ask a member. Hopefully, some day we can connect the Greenway with our northern neighbors in Cuba as well as our southern friends in Olean. Such a nice way to bring in the New Year with new faces, young and old, all with smiles!

On behalf of the Hinsdale Bicentennial Committee, our first town event is a short "First Day Hike", off North Street, meet at Methodist Church, 8:45 am, January 1st, 2020, open to all. Second is a thank you to all that purchased raffle tickets and Sue VanDeCar for making a "Hinsdale Quilt", bet it comes in handy this cold winter.
Winners:
Lottery tickets: Bill Aiello - Olean
Quilt: Barb Jadroslow - Franklinville
Cutco knives: Tim Engels - West Valley
CD, signed by Tony Jackson: K. Klarowski - Buffalo

Finally, hope to see many throughout 2020 as we celebrate our 200th Birthday. From our hearts, Merry Christmas and the very best New Years to all!

Calling All Community Artists
Hinsdale’s 200th birthday is in 2020. The Historical Society is planning to hang a large bicentennial banner on the Rt. 16 side of the school fence. We would like 2 sketches that reflect past and present changes between 1820 and 2020. The pictures may relate to any theme. Farming, school, fashion, transportation, and architecture are some ideas. Line drawings are needed so they can be replicated on a large banner in one color and identifiable from a distance. There is a $25 prize for each of the pictures chosen.
Submissions are due by Friday, September 20th, 2019 and can be taken to the school office or by contacting the town clerk, Ann Carr, at 716-557-2478, ext 5. All submissions will be displayed at various 2020 events. Be sure to attach your name to all submissions.

Hinsdale had it's first Bicentennial Meeting last night. We are contemplating a historical 2020 Hinsdale Calendar, reminding all the various functions throughout the year celebrating our birthday. Our next meeting is Tuesday February 12th, 7:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church, public welcome and needed! "On March 11, 1808, an act of the New York State legislature provided that land should be taken from Genesee County to organize Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties." Until 500 taxable voter inhabitants were established, we remained part of Niagara County.

The center of our town, known as the “Park”, formerly the “Square” and earlier referred to as the “Common”.

In 1843, the Hinsdale Academy was built. In 1855, that building was purchased to become a district school and town hall. In 1901, the ground became Hinsdale Union School. 1952 brought a new fire house building, the Hinsdale, Maplehurst, & Pleasant Valley Fire Department. In 1989, a gazebo was built in front of the firehall in the park. Last year was Hinsdale Historical Society's first tree lighting.

This year, December 20, 2018 saw Hinsdale Historical Society’s second tree lighting including almost 200 luminaries. Many thanks to the folks that decorated individual trees donated by KG Reiss and Johnson's Tree Farm, Jolly Roger and Wendy, the Genesis House in Olean, and all that baked cookies and helped on this fun community event. On behalf of Hinsdale Historical Society, Happy Holidays to all and the best in 2019!

On another note, last Thursday's tree lighting also include another special moment as Santa presented Colton Smith of Hinsdale a $500.00 scholarship check on behalf of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Dept.

Jolly Roger will lead us with music and caroling; sing along sheets will be provided. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided and hot dogs will be available for sale. Hinsdale is a small town with a large heart. Bring the family; the museum will be open!

11/23/2018

The Hinsdale Historical Society has been donated fifteen Christmas Trees and we will set them up for decoration by December 1st. Not all trees are claimed, so call 716-557-2643 or any historical society member to claim and decorate one. Organizations, businesses or families are welcome to decorate a tree in remembrance of someone or to advertise your business or organization. The donated trees are first come, first served. Expanding on last year's tree display will be a lighting of hundreds of luminaries on December 20 in support of Genesis House. Luminary kits can be bought for $10.00. (Call Jan at 716-378-5098).

I visited here several years ago. Lots of very interesting items and information. It is clear that a lot of volunteer hours have been spent here by many committed people.
