Legend says there are gardens that only bloom beneath the moon.
The flowers sleep through the heat of day, saving their finest colors for the night. Fireflies become lanterns. The moon becomes a storyteller. And if you are very quiet, you may catch sight of the garden's guardian sitting in an upstairs window.
In Mike Smith's Norwegian Moon, that guardian is Tim the cat.
From his perch above the flowers, Tim watches over a kingdom of color. The red watering can rests after a day's work, while moonlight spills across petals painted in impossible blues, violets, and greens. The little cottage glows with the promise of home, and the night sky stretches endlessly beyond.
Created through the demanding serigraph process using approximately sixty separate color screens, the piece feels less like a print and more like a dream assembled one layer at a time.
Perhaps that is why so many people stop when they see it.
