From Cara Duell:
Some of you may know but if not, we have moved back to Indiana. We are having a moving sale on Saturday. At this point, if it wasn't put in the truck or van, it is not going. Tons of stuff from the house (decor, dining room tables and chairs, bookshelves, other furniture), sporting goods, tools, patio furniture, kitchen stuff, books, and plenty of Duell miscellany. We will be at the house from 9 until 3 or so on Saturday, 310 N. Elm. Look for the signs. Pictures to come as we set up on Friday.

Did you know that the inventor of the ATM, John Shepherd-Barron, was a Scotsman who came up with the idea while lying in the bath? πŸ›€πŸ’‘ Born on June 23, 1925, in Shillong, India, Shepherd-Barron was inspired by chocolate vending machines to create a self-service cash dispenser. He led the team that installed the first ATM at a Barclays branch in London on June 27, 1967. Shepherd-Barron's machine used special checks with a PIN, and his wife Caroline even influenced the PIN length to be four digits, which became the global standard πŸ“πŸ’³ Despite not patenting his invention, Shepherd-Barron was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2004 for his services to banking. He passed away on May 15, 2010, at the age of 84. Let's remember this lesser-known inventor who revolutionized banking and made our lives easier πŸ’ΈπŸ‘

"The Joy of Cooking" was written by Irma Rombauer, a woman who wasn’t even a trained chef. Faced with hardship after her husband's death in 1930, she self-published the first edition in 1931. Crazy, right? With only $3,000, she printed 3,000 copies. Its conversational style and practical recipes made the book a surprise hit. Rombauer's iconic cookbook has now sold over 20 million copies and still sits in kitchens across America. πŸ“šπŸ² Her story shows how innovation can change lives. Irma’s love for home cooking turned into an essential guide for many. Talk about inspiration. πŸ‘

The family of Heinrich Bartel is working to reconstruct the limestone house that was built when the Polish Mennonites settled in the Hillsboro area. The family's history of great faith and missionary work in China would be shared throughout this building. There is a page with more information, https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093948915941
This would be an addition to the Visitor's Center campus.

In honor of the stone house that Heinrich F. Bartel built in 1879 in Hillsboro, Kansas

WISHING all Hillsboro area graduates A FUN & SAFE HOMECOMING weekend! Visitors today from Oregon won the 'farthest traveled award.' Part of the museum's recent updates were done specifically to make it more inclusive for all of our visitors. Several of the items can be touched and played with - in fact we ENCOURAGE it! Also, organizing and widening of pathways allows for more groups and school classes to enjoy together, while making more areas accessible for those with mobility aids.
