The dolls in this case were part of Angela Peterson's personal collection. The tall doll in the red dress was a gift from Ms. Peterson's boyfriend. She was eventually misplaced and remained lost for 16 years, until Ms. Peterson's mother found her and returned her.
Even though Shirley Temple's movie career lasted until she was in her 20s, she is best known for her work as a child star during the 1930s starring in films such as "Bright Eyes" and "Heidi."
Merchandise featuring the young star was very big business in the 1930s; Shirley Temple dolls were especially popular, and reached $45 million in sales by 1941. Here at the museum, we have a large collection of these dolls on display, dating from the 1930s and beyond.

During the Protestant Reformation in 16th century Europe, some of the icons discarded from churches and other religious institutions found a new purpose...as dolls.
Even though the nativity figures in our creche room have never been toys, they remain a fascinating glimpse into the past.
One more picture from the Great American Dollhouse Museum!
Here is another picture from The Great American Dollhouse Museum, located in Danville, Kentucky
Recently, a board member of The Doll & Miniature Museum of High Point visited The Great American Dollhouse Museum in Danville Kentucky, which is billed as "A Social History Museum in Miniature." This is certainly true, as it has a progression of dollhouses representing the homes and fashions of various eras in history.
The Great American Dollhouse Museum also has a large and exceptionally well-stocked store (pictured here), which has anything and everything a miniaturist or dollhouse enthusiast might need.
While our board member was visiting, The Travel Channel was filming for a program which can be found on their website. Visit www.TheTravelChannel.com, and click on "Best of the Road" to find and enjoy this particular program.
Here at the Doll & Miniature Museum of High Point, we have a number of impressive miniatures on display, including the Eugene Kupjack miniature bedroom gallery. These delightful displays, as well as our fabulous collection of dolls from various eras, are also an excellent slice of history and social progression.
Pierre Francois Jumeau founded his doll company in the 1840s, but it was his son Emile who introduced the "Bebes Jumeau" in 1877. These dolls had fine quality bisque heads and jointed composition bodies.
Though most dolls of this period were styled as fashionable young ladies, the Bebes Jumeau were designed to resemble children, and were sculpted with innocent expressions that have won over many a child and collector.
We have three fine Jumeaus in our collection, including this lovely little lady, who was made in the 1880s.
The origins of Japan's "Hina Matsuri" can be traced to the Heian period, which lasted from 794 - 1185. The festival was originally religious in nature and had its roots in ancient purification rituals meant to dispel evil spirits.
By the Heian period, the dolls were displayed rather than discarded. The festival has continued to evolve over the centuries; it is now regarded as the "girls' day" festival, and is marked by elaborate displays of dolls dressed in traditional clothing.
We have not one but two sets of these lovely figures on display in the museum; come visit to see a piece of history!
