Our work continues on St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Two coats of paint have been completed on the entire exterior. We are profoundly thankful for all the help!

• James Speiser loaned painting equipment, plus gave good advice, and gave a discount at the paint store. His guidance has been priceless!
• Erin Wann provided the crew with lunch and has made a generous donation to the society.
• Jaden Yoder and Kenny Blair for their lifts.
• John Battershell for paint price, sander, and discs.
•our work crew: Tom, Luke, Eric, and Roger

We will contine with a window repair tomorrow on the front (the circular window needs to be temporarily stabilized until we raise the funds for complete window refurbishment) and some chimney repair as well.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Historical Society members have been working hard this week to get our treasured St. Paul’s church repainted. Tomorrow’s job will be scraping and sanding. Anyone willing to help out is welcome. Bring a scraper. Work begins around 7am and continues throughout the morning.

A shoebox was recently delivered to the Historical Society - a gift from some area folks. What was inside was an incredible collection of Native American artifacts. There are arrowheads and several types of tools. Also included in the box
were some books that help in identifying the stones.
And the best part is, these were all found right here in Hicksville, most likely within a block or two of our museum. Here's the story:

John Darnall and his wife recently moved to Bryan, Ohio. The arrowheads came from Susan Goldman who resided in the state of Oregon and knew the Darnalls. She gave them to John, along with a letter telling the history of the artifacts.
Susan's great grandfather David Arthur James (born in 1863) was a jeweler and married his wife Georgia Greenwood, born in 1874 in Hicksville, Ohio. They built a house somewhere on Main near High Street in the late 1800s to early 1900s. While digging the foundation of this house, they found these arrowheads.

Hopefully, further research will show us exactly where these were found.

Please plan to view this collection at the Land Office. Remember,we are open the first Wednesday of each month from 3 to 5 pm or by appointment.

Many hands joined together to clean up and cut up the large maple tree that was recently taken down behind St. Paul's Church. The tree - mostly dead - was a potential hazard to the Church and to the neighbor's property. Jeremiah and his crew from Goliath Tree and Lawn Service of Defiance did a great job of taking the tree down and landing it in the yard behind the church! We appreciate their conscientious work.

Members of the Historical Society Board, friends, and neighbors from Grace Methodist Church teamed up on Saturday, hauling MANY loads of brush to the
recycling site. The remaining limbs were cut into usable portions and the large
pieces were either similarly cut or hauled to other properties.

These photos show what a huge task this was. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to help!

🌟HELP NEEDED!🌟

Our historic St. Paul’s Church is getting a facelift!

In addition to raising funds for the repair of the beautiful stained glass windows, the Board is planning to prepare and repaint the building’s exterior, with work to begin early September.

The crew of sanders and painters is looking for a few good hands - and feet - to serve as helpers and runners.

We also are in need of a ‘lift’ to hoist the workers to the upper levels.

In addition, we’re looking for someone who can handily repair broken/missing wooden pieces as they become visible during the painting process.

Anyone wishing to help in the project please contact us at
[email protected], by phoning 419-487-3096, or by contacting any Board member.

The Church is a precious piece of our town’s past and deserves to be preserved. We appreciate the support of the community in this task.

[AND - if you would like to help in some other way, we would appreciate donations of funds
toward the paint and other supplies. (You can donate securely by using this link https://hicksvillehistoricalsociety.givingfuel.com/hicksville-historical-society]

Hi Friends - Hopefully, you've made plans to participate in the MANY activities coming up in Hicksville for the Sesquicentennial Celebration. Starting June 5th with a community dinner at the Rustic Handle Factory venue, we'll kick off the festivities with a delicious meal, some special guests and drawing for the winner of the quilt. Beginning Friday morning, there will be so many things going on - games, sales, wagon rides, food, fun!
The Historical Society will have open houses at the Land Office and St Pauls' Church. We'll also be having a "tent" sale: items have accumulated that do not pertain to our town's history so we're offering others the opportunity to acquire them for a donation.

On Friday evening, the parade begins at 6, followed by a special concert at the Huber featuring a reproduction of the Hart's Boys and Girls Bands. Saturday will offer more of the same PLUS a car show - and to cap it all off - FIREWORKS after dark!

Do NOT miss this very special celebration - after all, how many times do you get to celebrate a 150th birthday?!

(More details available at the Village's Website) See you soon!!
