How close would you have lived to your nearest Tucker dealership? The Tucker Corporation signed agreements with over 1,600 franchise owners across the United States to distribute and sell the Tucker ’48 fastback sedan. Many of these franchise owners were independent garages and automobile dealers located in small towns. Blair McPhail, #3 Region Sales Manager and Fred Rockelman look at a growing dealer map of the United States as the network was being established.

This is an original 1949 Membership Card for the National Tucker Distributor & Dealer Association, Inc. The non-profit Corporation was located at 3527 N. Western Ave, Chicago, IL. This card belonged to Hadsall Motors, a dealership located in Denver, Colorado, and operated by Guy Hadsall.

On June 19, 1947, distributors and dealers gathered at the Tucker factory in Chicago to preview the Tucker ’48. This pamphlet highlights the day's activities which included tours of the factory and grounds, lunch, and presentations given by company executives.

In 1948, brothers Anthony (left) and Frank (right) Jalovek of Argo, Illinois, posed in front of their newly constructed Tucker Dealership. The Jalovek’s were one of several hundred franchise owners across the country who believed in Tucker’s vision for the future of the automobile industry. If you look closely, you can see company promotional broadsides in the windows.

The Tucker factory in Chicago featured stations where upholsters prepared and installed Tucker ’48 interiors. In the first image, you can see the rows of sewing machines inside Building No. 4-A. In the second image, Trim Engineer L. Pinkham examines fabric samples submitted by various suppliers. The third image captures workers installing interiors on partially-complete bodies. The final image depicts interior designer Audrey Moore with samples.

In mid-to-late 1947, testing began on the prototype 589 engine designed by Ben Parsons. The 589 cubic inch six-cylinder engine, with relatively large 5 inch cylinder bores, featured a unique system of hydraulic oil lines used to actuate the valves. While this engine yielded high torque it only produced a meager 67-88 horsepower. Only 6 engines were built, one of which was briefly used on the Tin Goose before being swapped out for the more balanced and powerful Franklin 335 engine. Today you can see a 589 engine on the test chassis on display at the Cammack Tucker Gallery.

This image shows prototype components used on the Tin Goose. Subsequent design and engineering refinements made to the Tucker ’48 production model rendered many of these parts obsolete. In this photo, the surplus parts are laid out on skids during, what we believe to be, a company promotional event held at the Tucker factory in Chicago.
