The intriguing Oracle at Delphi was the inspiration for one of my 2025 designs. We visited the site of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in Greece in May. High on a hill, it is a magical site. The photos show the pottery that inspired my sculpture (the Oracle sitting on her tripod in the Temple and speaking with Aeneas), my sculpture, the remains of the Temple, and the stone (with three holes) on which her tripod sat in the Temple. I saw this amazing painting “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose” at the Tate Britain this year. I have been wanting to see the actual painting since it has been restored and since I used it as inspiration for my 2024 Copper Curls collection. It did not disappoint. This painting helped restore Sargent’s reputation after the controversial Madame X painting. It also was one of his first plein air paintings after he painted with Monet. Flower Show

I love to see photos of my artwork in my customers' gardens. The three in this Pennsylavania garden are Flora with Bouquet, Madonna of the Lilies with Cherub, and Douglas Fir Mother Tree. Each was created for a different theme at the Philadelphia Flower The Philadelphia Flower Show. The first for the United by Flowers theme was part of the Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose series inspired by Sargent's painting. The second for the Rivera Holiday theme was inspired by Mucha's Madonna of the Lilies and a floral fashion show at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the one on the right for the In Full Bloom/Healing Power of Nature theme was inspired by my visits to many ancient rain forests and my reading Suzanne Simard's Finding the Mother Tree. When I heard about the theme Gardens of the Future, the first thing I thought about was how folks respond differently to important predictions about the future. Some hear the predictions and don’t believe them, others believe the predictions but find them confusing and ambivalent, and finally some believe the prophesies but don’t really value or act on them until it is almost too late. I did lots of reading and research and found three ancient prophetesses who represent these three points of view. The first is represented by Cassandra, a Trojan princess: she was given the gift of prophesy by Apollo, but, because she would not submit to his desires, she was cursed with no one ever believing her and many thinking her mad. The second perspective is represented by the Pythia or Oracle of Delphi. Her prophesies given while sitting on a tripod in a cave below the Temple at Delphi were valued and believed but on occasion misinterpreted. The third was the Sibyl of Cumae. She wrote nine books of prophesy and offered to sell them to the the Emperor Tarquinius. He laughed at her and refused, saying the price she asked was too great. So she burned three and offered him the remaining six for the same price. He once again refused, so she burned three more and offered the remaining three for the original price for the nine. He bought them. Many said that the fall of Rome could have been avoided if they had had access to all nine books of prophesy. Below are my versions of these prophetesses.
