New Hampshire-then and now

This is Proctor Square in Henniker,N.H. in the 1890s. This was the commercial center of town. This business block was destroyed by the great fire of 1893. Notice the cool water fountain to the right. It's even got a light. This fountain must have been just about where that little road divide island is at the intersection of Main and Bridge st. Henniker Pharmacy would be to the right. www.facebook.com/NewHampshireThenAndNow

We found this photograph framed among my Dad's things. It is a group of men but we can't figure out what they are doing. The front of the photo says "Whittier - Henniker, New Hampshire" so I am assuming that that is the photographer. I would appreciate any insight that you might have into this mystery. Thanks.
