A few sculpture pieces in the Hadley Foundation Art Collection that we 🫶🏻.

Through an intriguing composition, a familiar face, or an installation location that encourages enjoyment of the outdoors, all of these pieces encourage contemplation. The therapeutic and aesthetic value of the collection is certainly reflected in the intentional craftsmanship of these sculptures 🤍✨

In order: “St. Wolfgang” by Ron Hinton , “Dr. Debakey” by Omer Knoll, and “Freedom in Flight” by Gary Kahle.

Seeing Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art and Patricia A. Schmidt Gallery ‘s title for the new FHSU faculty exhibition, “A Tangle of Creativity”, reminded us of the pieces in our collection that are full of colorful twists and tangles💫✨

We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight that the opening reception of “A Tangle of Creativity” is tomorrow evening, October 16th, from 6-8:00 pm. A good portion of the Hadley Art Collection features pieces by former FHSU art professors, so we are very excited to see the work of the current faculty🤍

In order: “Color Refraction” by Diane Lawrence and “Garden That Was” by Colette Bangart.

John C. Thorns was a beloved member of the Hays art community, as he served as professor and chairman of FHSU’s art department in addition to founding the Hays Arts Council. He was a prolific artist, often depicting scenes from nature with dynamic compositions, rich colors, and carefully painted textures. Thorns is especially important to the Hadley Art Collection, as he was the first curator of the collection, and held this position from 1974-2014.

-> if you would like to see more of Thorns’ work, let us know in the comments. We have well over 100 pieces by Thorns in our collection🎨🩵

In order: “Drought at Cheyenne Bottoms”, “Gateway to the City Park”, “Prairie”, “Garden Plaza”, and “After Summer”.

Abstraction: When an artist chooses to focus on shape, form, color, or line, rather than depicting realistic representations of figures, nature, or objects.

Let us know in the comments what you see in these abstract pieces from the Hadley Art Collection! As artist Arshile Gorky said, “Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes.”🔎🖼️🤍

In Order: “Never Ending, Never Beginning” by David Robertson, “Composition” by Mark Parson, “Emerald Island” by Richard Slimon, “Pretender #14” by David Kinder, “Gladiolus Triptic” by Diana Werts, and “Untitled” by Bonnie Campbell.

This week we are featuring a medium that is familiar to most, yet takes talent to master:

Oil Paint🎨🖼️🤍

Oil painting, with its slow drying period and application through layers or glazes, has been a major part of art history for a long time. Early Renaissance artists like Jan van Eyck and later artists like Rembrandt preferred oil paints over traditional egg tempura. In 1841, the metal paint tube was invented, which allowed artists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh to take their paints into the outdoors. Nature scenes, like these pieces in the Hadley Foundation Art Collection, can be captured with painstaking detail through the usage of oil paints!

In order: “Shadow Blue Iris” by David Gross, “Buck Brush “N” Barnes” by Ed Pointer, and “Vining Wall” by Barbara Cleary.

The Hadley Foundation Art Collection resides on the walls of HaysMed, giving us the chance to experience firsthand the dedication and courage it takes to be a healthcare worker🩺🤍

In addition to these beautiful sculptures that reside in front of HaysMed, we wanted to highlight the “Mapping the Gap” art exhibit from 5-6pm today in the Salina Arts Center, which provides a great contribution between the relationship of healthcare, creativity, and Kansans.

If you have any questions about the collection, please contact our social media pages!

In order: “Partners #1” and “Partners #2” by Gary Coulter.

This Thursday, we thought we’d highlight our foundation’s namesake, the Hadley Family🌾

The journey of the Hadley Family from Illinois to a ranch just north of Hays on the Saline River began when Mr. Hadley passed away in 1882 and Mrs. Hadley decided to move the family to Ellis County in 1888. Some of the Hadley siblings tragically passed away on the trip or eventually left the ranch and never returned, but Mark, Dolly, and Lily Hadley stayed. They were able to watch it grow from a cattle ranch into the largest oil pool in Kansas once oil was discovered on the property in the 1930’s. With the income generated by oil, the Hadley Family was able to support a local hospital. At that time, the hospital was known as Hadley Hospital and is now a part of HaysMed. The Hadley Foundation still works closely with HaysMed to carry out the Hadley Family’s vision today.

If you have questions about the Hadley Family’s story or legacy, please reach out to our social media pages!

In order: “Hadley Ranch” by Phil Cott, “Hadley Ranch” by William Eastman, and “Hadley Ranch #2” by Phil Starke.

The Hadley Art Collection is supported by an incredible network of upcoming and established local artists. And just like the feeling of connection that “City Market” by David Curry evokes, we are thankful to be a part of this creative community.

That is why we wanted to highlight the Fall Art Walk, hosted by the Hays Arts Council, that is happening tomorrow (Friday, August 28th) from 6-9 pm🎨🤍
There will be art all throughout downtown Hays, in addition to other locations.
Make sure to check out the Hays Arts Council website for more information!
