Discover and Explore Science

Discover and Explore Science Discover and Explore is about science fun! Science is all around us, we see it and use it every day.

My goal is that one day, maybe just maybe someone will remember my classes or videos and say, "Science is so cool!" Kids because their inborn curiosity are really just little scientists. At Discover and Explore we encourage and expect them to explore those questions and discover the answers through hands on experiments and activities.

Did you know that we have a PARTIAL eclipse viewable in Virginia, on April 8 starting around 2 pm. It's a Monday and kids will be in school. The biggest question of the day, will my glasses I fought to hard to get in 2017, remember how hard they were to find at the last minute, will they be safe to use. The answer is complicated. How important is your eyesight to you? In my humble opinion, go to amazon, and fork over the $2 and get new ones. But here is one page that has some information worth reading! https://eclipse2024.org/glasses_old.html
Do your own research!
Also check out your State Parks, they will have some programming a few weeks earlier to get you in the mindset on how to watch safely. Have fun! AND BE EYE SAFE!

Ok my nature loving friends with kids. Here is a great resource to take with you on your outdoor adventures. My friend Cindy Smith has created a series of cards to take on hikes to encourage Discovering and exploring nature . check it out! I did.

“ Connect with nature every day, you get smarter in every way ” Nature Everyday™ cards help adults build critical thinking skills in children by easily engaging them in nature, encouraging active open-ended exploration and scientific discussions — with little to no prep work! Aligned with ma...

Hey parents. Today's lesson wasn't worthy of a video. We learned a song about plant parts and got to see, touch and eat the 6 plant parts! Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds! The song is by the Banana Slug String Band . I have been singing this song to kids for over 20 years! It's a classic. I suggest looking it up on You Tube. The Banana Slugs are awesome!!!

Hey friends. I've donated a science playdate for 10, 6-10 year Olds. The auction benefits my churches missions including bringing clean water to Ethiopia. The auction is open on the public, $10 fee can be paid at the door. It's a sock hop theme party and auction. Let me know if you want to join us.

It's getting down in the teens again tonight. Why not have some fun!! Fill up balloons with water. Add some kool-aid, or juices for color. Don't use food coloring as it often contains glycol, a preservative, that will keep the water from freezing. Have fun. Also try the freezing bubbles trick!

01/04/2022

So I did it! Go outside while it's super cold, it's 22 here, and no wind. Blow a bubble and catch it. Then let it sit in the cold air until it freezes. Super cool!!! You can see how clear the bubble was when I first blew the bubble. Then it got cloudy as the water in the bubble mixture froze. Just regular bubble mixture nothing fancy

A good day for a repeat. I may try this today! Freezing bubbles

A good day for a repeat. I may try this today! Freezing bubbles

Bubbles in the winter? YES Why not. We normally think of bubbles as the fun spring and summer time favorite of kids but they are just as much fun in the cold temperatures. In fact we think a bit more fun.

Bubbles will actually last a little longer in the cold weather than they do in the warmer weather. The reason is that bubbles are composed mostly of water. When the weather is warm the water in the bubbles will evaporate faster. So if the temperature is colder the water evaporate more slowly and you can see the bubbles longer, if it is super cold the bubbles may even freeze before they fall to the ground. If you want to try it out, find a place where there is not a lot of wind, on a very cold day (check the weather this week it is going to get cold!) Then try blowing bubbles in the warm house, for more science, blow some bubbles in the bathroom after a hot shower. The humidity in the bathroom may keep the bubbles from popping too fast!

Send a photo of your bubbles and we may post them on the site!

Yesterdays class was learning about simple machines. We explored wheels and inclined planes. They started on their own, then figured out working together got better, and more fun results. Not pictured is the pipe insulation that was cut in half to make a marble run. These scientists got very creative with it all!!

11/22/2021

Today's lesson exploring acids and bases or alkaline liquids. A little prep ahead of time making purple cabbage juice. Use whatever clear cups you have and test away!! Try laundry detergent, borax or oxy clean. Have fun!
